Last train ride

Last train ride

A Poem by Carissa Marie

Outside, the scenery changes
From one thing to the next.
A constant blur of greens,
Of lush flowers,
And a soft breeze.
In front of me
Your eyes are closed,
Your teeth clenched,
Like what you always do,
Like what you always are:
Lost in your own world
As you await our arrival.
I watch you carefully,
Intent on memorizing your face.
I notice how your face would shift,
Every time the sun would reach you.
A beautiful sight.
It's as if the subtle change,
Transformed you into another.
I wanted to watch you more,
To catch the different expressions
That you hide.
But the train lurched to a stop,
Signaling the end of our journey.

You opened your lifeless eyes,
As our last train ride had arrived.
