A chilly dayA Story by CalebSchadeckLance Verdisi was listening to music in his car; there was nothing good on just the faint sound of some county song through static. Lance appreciated the noise though it gave him comfort that there were still people willing to play music out there. The ancient 2008 Toyota pickup sped along the beaten-up road at sixty miles per hour, in the back of the pickup there was a storage-box sized sky surveyor that he was going to set in the exact spot the GPS told him, the thing is he didn’t know where the GPS was going to take him, it would beep when he was close to the right coordinates, then he would get out of the truck and mount the weather surveyor. About another mile down the road and Lance’s radio died into static, he tried to search for another station but was unsuccessful sighing he turned off the radio and the inside of the car died down to the engine along the road. From inside the car it felt like a warm day but that was only because the car had been sitting in the sun till ten in the morning and it had time to heat up. The weather outside was bitterly cold only about 20 degrees. Lance didn’t mind the cold which is why the corporations choose him to mount the weather surveyor a task that took two days to do, but he was paid well and he needed all the money he could get. The paved road turned into dirt, and the GPS beeped, but not because Lance had reached the location this beep told him that he needed to turn. Lance stepped on the breaks and looked at where the GPS was telling him to go, it displayed no road just a blank white screen with a red arrow telling him to go Left. Lance looked at the path it was telling him to go on, which turned out to not be a path at all. The desert landscape had one road carved out by the former paved road that was there, the sides of the road had huge piles of dirt on them which made you lower than the landscape around you, Lance’s GPS was telling him to drive over the hill of dirt and continue where there was no path, impossible for the ancient pickups for wheel drive to drive over. Where are you taking me? Lance thought a he slipped on his coat and stocking cap and hopped out of the truck and walked around the back side to the bed of the truck. He opened the back and hopped in then lifted the weather station (which was surprisingly light) and set it on the ground next to the truck, then he walked back over to the side door of the truck and pulled out what looked like a flip phone, he opened it and began talking. “This is Verdisi requesting a change of cars; I need a type number 5 landscape off roader with enclosed passenger and driver seat and a truck bed for cargo.” Lance didn’t expect such a fast response it usually took them about ten minutes but this was instant. “This is sector seven responding to you vehicle change request, please confirm yourself.” Sector seven? Lance thought as he turned the phone over and held it up to his eye for it to scan. Last I checked there were only six, and there not called sectors there called divisions. The man on the other end started talking “Thank you, and your request has been confirmed, there are going to be some minor updates to your transportation request but it still covers everything you need.” “How long will the vehicle take?” “Half an hour.” Lance was surprised it usually took an hour and that was on a good day. “Thank you” Lance said and he hung up the phone and place it back it the truck, then he backed away with the weather station, the Toyota disintegrated before his eyes with a loud bang then the shape of another car started after about ten minutes Lance realized that it wasn’t a car at all. © 2011 CalebSchadeckAuthor's Note
