The One That Got Away

The One That Got Away

A Story by caitlinrosecyr

I'm going to be the one you think of in 20 years
When you're married to some uptight woman
whom you have extremely boring sex with,
and had two kids with,
and those two kids will be nothing like how we were.
They're going to grow up boring and to study law,
they aren't going to grow up wanting to party.
Which you did, which I never did.
They aren't going to be great or creative.
I'm going to be the one you think of when
you're sipping on your coffee or smoking your cigarettes
down to the bone,
because those were the things I had adored about you.
When you're working on saving the environment, too.
Even though I didn't understand half of what you were saying
when you'd talk about it,
I didn't care that I didn't understand,
I loved that you were so passionate about it.
I'm going to be the one that shows up everyday
as little things most people wouldn't notice.
And you're going to realize how much you fucked up,
how much you regret ever letting me leave.
You're going to regret never stopping me.
You're going to miss me.
You're going to remember how much I invested in you,
the nights I stayed up to comfort you,
the songs I told you made me think of you,
the words I wrote about you and how it all made you felt.
And it'll all be for nothing.
I'll be the one that got away.
