I Gave You Those Wings

I Gave You Those Wings

A Poem by Caitlin Lea

I gave you

Those wings

When infancy

Kept you

From walking

At all.

I lovingly

Made them

To show you

They’d fit you.

I sewed them

Onto you,

So we could fly

Together.

We did

For awhile,

Until it grew

Much too easy

To just stay

With me.

I gave you

Those wings

That you flap

In my face

And painfully

Mock me.

Now they

Are yours.

Now

You are free.
