The Life I Once Had

The Life I Once Had

A Chapter by Charles Halapin

Altaïr Ibn La-Ahad is my name.  In the English language it means “The Son of None”, or “The Flying One”.  My name sends fear into the hearts of men.  It was not always this way.  There was once a time when I was happy.  When I was not a hunt and hated man.  I was a boy born into privilege.  My father was a humble merchant who made his living lawfully and safely.  When The Crusades began, we did not think the Christians would attack a neutral merchant.  When the finally came for us, they showed no mercy.

“Leave nothing for the dark skinned enemy to use” yelled the Templar.

“Please I’m a simple merchant I will give you what you want just please don’t hurt my family”

Unfortunately, they accepted but they soon decided to take everything.  They dragged my mother out of the hall after they had beheaded my father in front of us.  As his head rolled on the crimson floor the Templars dragged my screaming mother away from me.  I would never forget he screams as they carried me from my home.  Once outside I heard the most disturbing sound my ears had heard, my mother cries shortly before being strangled slowly.   As I cried out, I rushed toward the door flanked by soldiers; suddenly the Templar stepped out of the house and grabbed me by the throat.  He raised me up, told me “You’ll never see this place again”

“Let me go” I choked out.

I soon found what I was to become: a servant to crusader warrior.  He threw me to the ground and was surrounded by the soldiers.  They proceeded to tie my hands and as I started to stand I was dealt a blow to the back of the head.  When I finally came to I was on a cart completely disoriented.  At the time I was only 6 so I was scared for my life.  This was the first time I had been away from home and I was being kidnapped.  As I drifted into a fear filled sleep, the sand and sun around me seemed to melt into a blue sky as I passed out.   Finally waking again my feet were dragging on the floor as two men carried me into the main hall. Before me was a fat, bearded warrior holding a sword as long as my whole body.  The two men dropped me in a huddled mass at the feet of the warlord.  The court stared at me like some new beast for a far off land.  I did not look like Muslims just as I did not look like the crusaders.   I looked like a mix which caused the wonder in the peoples eyes.  As I looked up the lord placed his sword under my chin jerking my head up to the point where I stared him in the eyes.  At the time I was filled with fear and it showed as he began to laugh.

“Where did you find this whelp?”

“He was found wandering the desert”

“The poor creature”, the lord chuckled “put him in some clothes and train him”

“Yes, my lord”

The soldier gave a bow and relayed the orders to other soldiers.  Again two men picked me up by the shoulders, and carried me back out of the room.  The clothes they presented me were disgusting and old.  They were essentially a pillow case and made me feel worthless.   After I received my new clothes I was thrown into my new home, a small cell less than 5 feet square.  I looked to the sky with longing eyes thinking I would never be happy again.  At this point, I had: not a god, not a home, not love.   As I began to cry, a voice of the other side of the wall sounded to me through the wall.

“Hey, don’t cry it’ll get better trust me” it said

“Who are you?”

“My English name is Arthur, but my real name is… I don’t remember.”

“You can’t remember how long have you been here?”

“Since I was a child I guess I can’t remember.”

“I’ll never get out of here!!!!!”

“Hey, it’s not that bad.   You’ll feel better in the morning.”

I laid myself on the cold stone floor and stared at the stars looking for and answer as I drifted to sleep.

Nice. You're off to a great start...(I'm going to start critiquing here.)
There are some grammar issues, and I know you could totally add more detail, but I'm enticed into the story.
