It Sounds Like the Ocean

It Sounds Like the Ocean

A Poem by Cagan
"

Have you ever noticed how few words we have for sounds?

"

Have you ever noticed

How few words we have for sounds?

I sit here, toes in the sand

Listening to the ocean

With no words to describe the noise

Poets, they write

Of an ocean that crashes and roars

But for me

A roar is a lion

And a crash is sudden

Waves do not crash

They roll, and they fade

Describing the voice of the ocean

Is best left to metaphor

As in describing any wonder

For which we have no words

After all, we can only understand

In relation to the familiar

“It sounds...like the ocean!”

An ocean may start with that crash,

That roar, but then fades to a river

laughing gaily for frightening you

“Come in,” it says,

Its voice like chimes

“Come in”
