Heroes and WarA Poem by Not Afraid of BruisesPLEASE DO NOT read politics into my poem. I am NOT looking for a debate. Thank YouWar? War happens to me, happens to us all the time. Everyday that you walk out your door and feel the need to duck Because you caught your son kissing a boy, or your daughter admits to getting an abortion three years ago and she never even called to say, “Hey, I’m okay,” when she got married that time in Vegas. War – wanting to love someone so much that your Mind rips to pieces, feeling the need to draw new Directions and rearrange the maps of the road So that you can avoid all the things that feel hairy between your toes. War happens everyday, When students dive for cover under decks at the sound of a drill horn when a boy is tied to a fence and murdered because he was different when your form characterizes how you think sleep and feel and weight is another way to pity yourself. War happens between the sheets of an affair And in the minds of those trying to hide it from their spouses because The love is just not there anymore and War is the pounding of a junkie’s blood as he tries to avoid his usual Corners because damn it, he doesn’t want To take the easy way out anymore. And war is something we can never feel when the real pain and agony And fear is more than an ocean away, war is a distant Ache between your heart and ribs that tells you, Hey, it’s time to f*****g feel something for a change It tells you that those are more than just soldiers on a screen They are your brothers sisters, husbands, mothers fathers and lovers, They are your friends siblings and honor students, your vadivictorains and your High school drug dealers, your convicts looking for the easy way out and they are Your freedoms carrying automatic firepower and wearing bulletproof armor. They are your voices taking action, your liberties running rampide They are the spirit of the red white and blue taking on hues That turn soggy and dripping dye that does not easily fade away, They are your people. And you’d better wake the f**k up, because one of them will die today. © 2009 Not Afraid of BruisesAuthor's Note
