![]() When Idiots SpeakA Poem by Not Afraid of Bruises![]() no doubt darker take on race in America - open mind required![]()
I grew up in a school where I could count the Number of Asians on one hand Where the difference in skin was quickly pointed out to me So I would know what to expect. And I hate stereotypes because sometimes they are true sometimes They surprise you as people fall into place Only because that’s what others assume. I shake free my suburban shame and Comb the cities for a lower beat One the fits my bones and hums under my skin so I can pretend to be darker than I am. Who the hell am I kidding Trying to play the diplomat when I have never Stepped outside my country – I claim to give a damn But if I really cared I’d be over there, Sweating it out with signs and giving my blood For what I know is right. Soldiers may not be popular in some eyes, but to me they are heroes, Men and women who give up their daily woes and battle it out With their morals as they protect what we are too blind to see And damn, look at them go, dropping like flies while America kills Itself in drive bys and gang fights and insists on stereotypes to mark out Who we can and cannot trust What’s the rush where are you going what Sights are you trying to avoid, And honestly – why can’t I come? Who says I wanted to be this person, have these eyes or see these things and damn, It’s hard to be the only idiot standing up. © 2008 Not Afraid of BruisesAuthor's Note
