Inside Your Prison

Inside Your Prison

A Poem by A.Lee

She thought she’d gotten over this

Erased all her self-doubt

But then you came along

And with your words you broke her down

She believed you when you said

That you’d be there no matter what

What she didn’t know was that

You’d be there punching her in the gut

You tell her that she’s worthless

That she needs to step it up

If she want to have your love

She’ll have to drink this bitter cup

You build her up then tear her down

Just to satisfy your need

As you're ripping her to pieces

You see her heart begins to bleed

She can't stand it anymore

But she knows there’s no way out

She's pledged herself to this

And now there’s no room left for doubt

With every day that passes by

She feels her mind slipping away

As she tries so hard to fight

And keep the hurt she feels at bay

There’s no use dwelling on her pain

There's no bridging this division

Doomed to live this way forever

She's locked inside your prison

I love this poem and have been there. I hope that you will read "The Crosswords" by marcie, which is on this same subject. It is horrific for a person to feel caught, male or female, in a verbally, physically, or mentally abusive relationship. There is only one choice; RUN!

It is a poem but as a story also, telling sad story. I like your writing much. There 4 lines which made enjoy reading it more are "You tell her that she’s worthless,That she needs to step it up,If she want to have your love,She’ll have to drink this bitter cup" You joined these lines together as it end with up and cup I like that.

Painfully emotional.

Awesome write on domestic violence and the cycle it thrives on. The feeling of hopelessness pours off this piece. Great job.

That last stanza is terrifically powerful; it takes all the preceding ones, throws them all into the air and catches the best of them as they drift back down to create the ultimate conclusion. I think this poem is a direct link to the last two, and they could perhaps be a trilogy on the same situation, with all its inherent complications. You always write such readable, flowing, and neat poems that can relate to so many people - without all that perfume-soaked pure love that reeks many another poem...

Powerful and aggressively written, but I feel that some of the rhythm was forced, and so the flow was a bit lost on me in some place. Overall, a good piece. :)
