MasksA Poem by Brandon ZlatniskiThe kind of world a person creates through lies, multiple personalities, and losing sight of what makes you "you"You have it all. The guy around your arms, the roof above your head, and your face. One for the friends, another for theirs. The perfect one for your lover, and the seductive one for bed The smile for the family, and the popularity on campus And then there's the one I see, the one I was once attached too. The perfect face, the life-long face, the one that's there from dawn to dusk. That face can only last so long until it rusts away to reveal the others you wore for everyone else. The love was as real as the plastic eyes you now stare daggers at me with. The heart was nothing more than the string wrapped around your brain, The same one that gave you the motive to lust, lie, and lose It's ok, theres always one to replace the damage you hide, the bridges you burn, what gives you shine to the silver enlaced in your tongue Was it love you sought? what you once knew? Or was it just another face you wore, the one you claimed was truth When does the plastic end and the flesh begin? How did a beautifully blank slate get so lost? The only face that's true is the one underneath all the rest The one that reveals the beauty, the intelligence, the heart Instead its covered by what you feel is truth, What keeps you alive, what makes you happy, What makes you lose selflessness You can wear multiple faces, they will last long while wandering this "perfect" world you're creating. You'll see your reflection, but how can you tell if it's another mask, or the dim ember of a soul afraid to shine.
