Summer storm

Summer storm

A Poem by Bethany Wong

Blue sky clouds over
Purple shining clouds
Reflecting not the sun, but themselves.
Wind, gale-force
Ripping through the trees
Roaring like the ocean
Every leaf a note in a mighty orchestra-
A crescendo of nature’s fury.
Indigo sky boils and lightning flashes
Bright like a brand in the sky
Then a drum roll, a thunderous rumble
Of a god’s steed galloping to war.
And the rain-
Not tears, but bullets
Streaking from the sky
To land hard on the unresisting ground
To pound mercilessly on the leaves of the very trees
That sing their requiem.
Woe! To be a creature caught
Out in the storm, where no creature should be.
Oh! To be out in the storm,
To dance in the rain and rejoice!
To be laughing as the thunder flashes and the lightning roars-
Only the crazy and the wild
Dare to face the storm.
Such beauty! Such ferocity
Hardly ever seen in our ordered modern world.
Such excitement –
Feel your heart race and your mouth grin in a parody of a smile.
Hands pressed against glass,
Longing without reason to be
Out there, barefoot, dancing-
Laughing and dancing.
Oh the wonder of the summer storm!
The heat which builds, oppressive
The clouds that gather, threatening
And then the beautiful storm
Which breaks above and looses to the earth all it holds.

Then the days after-
When the thrill of the storm is but a memory,
And the sky is blue and cloudless, calm,
And all the heat and pressure is gone
Vanished with the storm
Leaving only the summer.
