Blame

Blame

Don’t blame me today
For all the children chanting my name
Love’s just another shade of grey

Don’t you know I’ve tried my best
Tried to make you leave your nest
I guess it was all but a test

I see you raised from the dead
With every last cigarette
Black smoke escaping your breath

It’s been some time since you bled
From the sound of your funeral spread
Shaken as you lay in your bed

That you made, futile attempt at a rest
Taking anything, hoping for the best
Yet there’s no beat in that chest

Put their blame on me, it’s what I deserve
After all I did was pray, pray for a better yesterday.

Interesting work here. The speaker seems to be one contemplating one no longer with us from the perspective of a person enwrapped in guilt. Perhaps some kind of illicit affair was involved, but the speaker seems torn between denying blame and finally acknowledging it. I'm sure the story behind this one is a tale of desperate acts that proved barren in the end.
