King Cotton

King Cotton

A Poem by EMMIE

He went downt to the fileds to prey
Upon the skin deep beauty
Of the goods he owned
Raging hormones
Searching for some
Sweet "thang"
Down upon the cotton clouds
He indulged himself
In the beauty of the Brown Sugar
As every last Brown granule
Scattered helplessly upon the Southern ground
He indulged himself
In the beauty of the Brown Sugar
King Cotton

I have no words that can express how this poem makes me feel. I could only shake my fist.
You've stopped my heart. The images that represent beauty are perfectly placed...as the
place which could be remembered as so picturesque has such darkness at its core.
Yes...this is brilliant. Even more so when I think about how many of these women today do
not have the luxury of feeling safe and secure when we see their homeland as the ideal place
of humanity. They are her. This struck me as both a story and metaphor. Deep.
