The Sweeping Beauty

The Sweeping Beauty

A Poem by EMMIE

The brick house
What a sight to see
So eloquent and peaceful
Strong and standing tall
A beauty on the outside
Rotting on the inside
Dirt to the ceiling

And the Sweeping Beauty

Sweeps the dirt
Right under the rug
No one would see
Under the rug

Sweeping Beauty

Locks the snakes
In the room with no windows
Sweeps the broken glass
In an isolated corner
Fills the empty fruit basket
With plastic apples and oranges
And when the beautiful brick house
Starts to rot again
She repeats the cycle

The Sweeping beauty

Have you been to her house
Are you there now
I am

Wow! I love the play on words. Your words, like archetypes, conjure powerful images and feelings . The fairy tale Aurora - and all the cast of characters there! - to the snakes in the windowless room - hidden but slithering...I can almost hear them. The word "rot" so intense and in contrast to the lovely brick house (my mind made a connection here to the Three Little Pig's brother's "house of bricks"). The image of the plastic fruit replacing the rotting fruit for show...to make all appear as it should be works so well.
Your last stanza feels as if you are coming out of the page...as if the poem has been going on and describing the home, attempt at cover-up, the futility and cycle of it, and then, as if your head turns and you lock eyes - this is so good.
