Whitewash

Whitewash

A Poem by Brandy Alexander

The silent war wages in the living room stage set

Thought the nine to five would be a safe bet

Got your calcium supplement, your vicodin and house pet

This is your life and it’s not over yet.

Another blast from the media gas clouds the eyes

You cough and sputter but you really don’t mind

Their broken vows and lies promise a safer time

Just follow the rules and keep yourself in line.

Tuck the kids soundly in the electric chair

Buy the best clothes, put on your make-up and trim your hair.

Buy the car, the house, the toys and always get your share

And if you see the needy, well they’re lazy, so just leave them there.

Whitewash the walls so you wont see the crack

Whitewash your arms so you wont see the track

Whitewash your dreams so you wont sense the lack

Whitewash your soul so you wont see it’s black.
