Tom Sighs

Tom Sighs

A Poem by Brandy Alexander
"

An emotional statement on modern classism.

"

Outside the walls, the highest gate

Outside the castle, the peasants wait

Hungry, tired, lonely, afraid

All their wages to the lords been paid.

Shivering cold, my dear huddled masses

Thirsting inside as the wine glass passes

Struggling to live, aching to die

Tom Joad sighs and the baby cries…

Inside the sow brazen with apple in teeth

Inside the walls the fat man eats

Beneath a ceiling stained in glass

He fills his belly and chokes on his class.

The ladies in waiting wipe at his chin

And he turns each on his lap for a luscious spin.

As each one slinks back skirts still high

Tom Joad sighs and the ladies they cry…

Beneath the high rise the hopeless beg for a drink

Beneath a bottle so he won’t have to think

About the life he was told he was free to live

A lie in which he can never forgive.

The opiated cattle are prodded along

And he watches them move in herds as he sings his song

For that silver spoon forever denied

He falls asleep cold and Tom Joad sighs.
