I Am Flame

I Am Flame

A Poem by Elizabeth Lynn
"

And she'll carve out / My soul / And light it / Brilliantly afire /

"

I’m on a high today

Staring out my window

Through the glaze

Of dust

And glare

And life

And as I stare

Someone's angel

Floats past—

Radiant with delight

Echoing my high

In each beat of her wings

And together

We praise the sun

And lift our hearts

In ecstatic sacrifice

To the altar

Of dreams

And sun

And flame

That is life

And someday

I’ll die

And she’ll carve out

My soul

And light it

Brilliantly afire

And the smoke will ascend

Past my dusty pane

To the pulsing sun

Where my own angel flies

Soaring in flame

And the passion of life

But for today

I’m high

I’m in the sky with my angel

In dreams

(In my mind)

And I thank the day

For sunning

And not crying

On my meager human fire
