The Big One

The Big One

A Poem by Bruna Digregorio

The Earth always did have limits

they were just beyond our sight,

we're ruining the throne

of the heavens and Earth.

I remember how frightening

it was to see the chandelier

that hung above our dining

table swing back

and forth during

every minor earthquake

and I sometimes couldn't sleep at night

terrified that the Big One

might strike while we were sleeping.

Buildings have been blown apart

families gather together

in the parts of blocks of flats

which are still standing,

seeing what remains

of their houses collapse around them.

We cannot forget that the Earth

does not belong to us

it has been borrowed

for our children.
