Moonlight and Progress

Moonlight and Progress

A Poem by Phil Sanders
"

Musings .....

"
Moonlight filters through the window
Fireflies dancing flights of love
As the evening slowly drifting
Shows the silken stars above
Long ago men searched the sky
Seeking thoughts and signs to hold
Waiting then for portents shining
Through the darkened night so bold
As they sailed their flimsy schooners
Round the oceans deep and wide
So the world became much smaller
As great distance they did ride
Then industrial revolution
Opened options never known
Now the world is like a raindrop
Falling freely on seeds sown
Sprouting up ideas like snowflakes
Myriad of thoughts and deeds
Internet and IPod billions
Opening up the chance to read
Where will all this progress lead us?
How will all the changes seem?
Now and then we need to ease down
Let the gentle minds just dream

Stunning.
Your words evoked a wistful quality.
I remember as a child looking at the stars and wondering. Remembering.
It's amazing what life is. How potent and beautiful.
Yet look at what technology has wrought?
Everything is about balance and nowadays it appears there is none.
But this is stunning, I love how it flows!
Brava!

This is a well-crafted piece with a consistent flow, both stylistically and chronologically.

It expresses a much-needed sentiment that seems utterly lost these days. We have an express need, as the recently-departed William F. Buckley, Jr stated, to stand athwart History and shout "Stop!" It is incumbent on all of us to understand that not all progress is good, and it is a sound idea, now and again, to take a collective deep breath...

Oh I like this one.... It really flows from a present musing to past, back to present, bringing that final question about where all the inventions are leading us. You have captured a wistful feeling of loss with the gains.

Wondeful writing Phil, moonlight and night skies my favouritetime of day or is that night ;) , very thoughtful poem, I often wonder myself where will all this technology and moving at such speed take us. I find it scary at times.
Now the world is like a raindrop
Falling freely on seeds sown
Sprouting up ideas like snowflakes

I like these lines but keep stumbling over the snowflakes, it doesn't quite gel for me.....
I just can't picture snowflakes growing like flowers??

This is great Phil! And the title really captures your message too. The beginning is particularly beautiful imagery, you take us on a gentle ride through the sky, into the past, the present, and pondering the future. The end really brings it all together. Sweet! KUDOS again! Keep musing!

the gesture of comparing the moon and progress is monumental, but you seemed to forget that by the end of the poem. Progress is truly a concept fraught with 'lunacy'.

Thoughts I've often had myself. It's a smooth piece, flows like water.
