All That Lives

All That Lives

A Poem by Brooklyn

The sparrow soars high

But all that leaps must dive

And all that lives must die

So the sparrow will fall

Tears of mirth fall

Out of the loved ones’ eyes

The eyes that see

The sparrow descend

One final time

It will not rise again

For the phoenix does not exist

In ashes it will not be reborn

The fire will burn away the memory of it

This sparrow dies old

But what of the young?

Do they die too?

In the midst of their youth?

All that lives must die

And for them the living cry

When it comes time

Time we waste

Even as the Fates

Prepare to cut the string

We use our allotted time

On things that don’t mean a thing
