Carnival

Carnival

A Poem by Colleen C Dunphy
"

I wrote this last night, but in the morning light I was ready to buy my tickets to get back in.

"

The rollercoaster ride is over.

I'm getting off at the bottom.

Feeling dizzy and nauseated.

The world spinning so fast around me.

I'm not sure if the ride was worth it.

Not sure if it was all that fun.

I just need to sit down for a while.

Maybe I'm too old for this kind of thing.

The ups and downs, the loop-de-loop.

It's all too much for my heart.

I'm not ready to get back in line.

I don't think I'll ever want to ride it again.

How many times do you have to go on before you just stay off?

Maybe I should try something safer, like a carousel.

The ride is a little gentler, you don't have to get so far off the ground.

Play it safe for a while.

Or maybe,

Leave this carnival altogether.

You can't fall off if you never get back on, right?

The thing is, doll, is that you are a woman of courage and a woman of courage will never be satisfied from just looking through a picture book of carnival rides. It's the thrill of potentially getting stuck at the tip top that makes your heart beat faster. It's the thrill of spinning upside down that makes the blood rush to all parts of your body, creating those stomach-turning tingles that remind you, Hey, I'm alive! YESSSSS!!!!

Don't let one ol' silly ride with a broken part scare you from the best damn rides! Not all rides are broken, doll. I promise you that. Just a few of them. I blame salary cutbacks.

Haha...I just went back to read this again and saw your "by-line"! GOOD! Terrific news! Whew! I thought you were thinking about going back to "cow tipping" again for your thrills! wink, wink.

"Maybe I'm too old for this kind of thing" I loved that line! I feel like that sometimes, watching the teenagers get into mosh pits at gigs. I have to sit down now!

Love the doubt and you express the physical motions perfectly.

Of course, I've never been one for rollercoasters...

Perfectly annotated with lots of hidden meanings. I loved the use of the carnival ride.

Funnel cakes! They are soooooooo good, and soooooooooo bad for you at the same time! ;)

I love this whole poem, the whole feeling that I'm left with when I finish it. :]
And I adore these lines
"Play it safe for a while.
Or maybe,
Leave this carnival altogether.
You can't fall off if you never get back on, right?"

What a perfect description of love... it can take you in so many directions and leave you sick and not knowing which way is up and yet we take the ride again when we recover... very nicely done.
