A Poem by Brittany E. Miller

My Iron Shell

I’ve been locked inside this iron shell for years

It’s cold just like the tears

Running down my face while I sigh

And look out of the peep hole with my eye

Sometimes I scream and wale

I hit the shell

But no one hears a thing

There is only the echo and the ring

Inside my iron shell

Shadow Friend

Shadow friend won’t you come out to play

On this beautiful day

Or has the sun chased you away

I get so lonely when you aren’t here

My heart fills up with fear

When I’m all alone

With no one to hold

Maybe I can have you by my side

If you won’t run and hide

I’ll wait for you my shadow friend

Until the sun’s day ends

Cupid’s Arrow

You asked me to go out

For some reason I had no doubt

It didn’t take too long

For love to sing it’s song

And we both sang along

Cupid’s arrow pierced through

I thought it got us both

But it didn’t get you

Now I’m left alone

With Cupid’s arrow through my bone

And you’re life has gone on

Words

There’s is so much to say

Where do I begin

Maybe it doesn’t matter anyway

And the words will have no meaning

No matter what I have to share

Words don’t mean anything if you don’t care

In that case they’ll be lost in thin air

Forever and forever

Glass Heart

Please promise me one thing

That if I give you my heart you won’t break it

Ad least return it to save it

Instead of letting it shatter on the pavement

Mr. Callous

Mr. Callous Heart

You never fall apart

You’re like a piece of art

A statue in the park

Thank you for your review. Usually when I write poetry it just kind of comes out of nowhere. I'm trying to be more thoughtful about how I put it together instead of just letting it flow out without any direction.

They all seem thematically related, though I'm not sure if they are parts to one poem? might think about it, if you haven't already.

I think I like Cupid's Arrow and Iron Shell best.

The last line to Cupid's Arrow might work better though if it goes.

"and your life has gone".

Just a little snip there.

The Iron Shell piece is strongest with imagery. I really felt like I was in some cold vat or something, claustrophobic, cold, alone and scared. It sets up the tone for the rest of the pieces.

You end it with an image too, and even though I'm uncertain that these are meant to be read against each other, I think the Iron Shell and Statue in the park work well to bookend the poems, so to speak.
