Hush

Hush

A Poem by Brinleigh Bailey
"

The lullaby for a misunderstood child.

"

Hush little baby, don't say a word,

So sorry Momma can't buy you a mockingbird.

Hush little baby, don't you cry,

Momma wishes she could give you the sky.

Hush little baby, please don't weep,

Turns out giving you the world isn't so cheap.

Hush little baby, I know it's not funny,

That the kids at school can tell we don't have money.

Hush little baby, I like your clothes,

They're patched together but no one knows.

Hush little baby, I taped the holes in your shoes,

Where in the world did you get that bruise?

Hush little baby, I'll mend your jeans,

They obviously don't know what ugly means.

Hush little baby, while I hold you tight,

As you cry yourself to sleep in my arms at night.

Hush little baby, they don't know what they've done,

And as for sympathy, they have none.

Hush little baby, I gave all that I could give,

To find a better place for you and I to live.

Hush little baby, you have to go to school,

Even if you will never be cool.

Hush little baby, Momma's always here,

Don't listen to the whispers that you overhear.

Hush little baby, don't be scared,

You're the piece of heaven God and I share.

Personally I would tighten this up a little to help the flow. The rhyming is good (I do like to rhyme as I enjoy the structure). For the lines after the ones starting with "Hush little baby" try counting the syllables making those lines all the same length.

Other than that...I think we can all relate to bullying for what ever reasons kids choose to bully.

This was beautifully tragic and I loved it. The only thing I would suggest is to watch the flow of your verses just to make sure they all run evenly and sound the same in terms of rhythm. Really well done!

This poem, according to my point of view, shows your soul to the full when it comes to be sensitive and merciful. I come from a poor family, I lived in a poor place, where the situation of many mothers was exactly like this! But what I think must be focused above all it's the force of the mother when it comes to her comforting position in the last sentence! A beautiful poem - for sure! Congratulations!

Amazing couplets. Specially the last two pairs. In 2nd line of the 3rd last pair, could do something like 'Befriend books, don't worry about not being cool', you know to maintain the mother's tone. I did so enjoy reading this, nice work, Brinleigh!

Well, did you mean it is cheap to give the world and not "word"? I am sorry but I could not help laughing at some of these poem lines. Like being cool was one of them. It is not so bad is it? They don't know what ugly means? Is the mother calling her child's jeans ugly? Why would mom catch her a mockingbird? isn't that illegal to have wild birds in the house? Just some things I was thinking and laughing at, but it was still interesting just not that sad.

Brought a tear to my eyes while reading this. Bullying is, by far, the worst and most overlooked action that people commit. You get your point across beautifully in this writing. I pray that this isn't from experience, that its just fiction. I hope you're all well and okay!

this story is as old as time ,and each time you hear it,it still bothers you
it seems the bully attitude always started with a young age, people making fun of others
and people that have to do without while people turn there noses up at them
