Chapter Two: Megan has run away and now finds herself in a predicament.

"

Hot, hot, hot fire, blurry orange and low voices.  A scream that is not her own, a whimper that is her own, a comforting cooing noise and a hand in her own.  Hot, hot, hot, the color orange is so very hot, that smell, that familiar smell is so very hot.

She runs from the fire, from the orange, she runs from the smell.  Kicking open the industrial doors with her favorite red shoes, she runs, runs, runs as fast as she can.  A shoe comes untied, but Megan does not stop, she has no time, someone is chasing her, someone is calling.  Past the little church, she’s run over a half mile now.  People stare.  Panting, she runs more, away from the fire, away from the State.  People begin to point.  Her long legs take her farther and farther away, closer to nowhere, but farther than there.  She did not know where she was going or what she would do.  Past the post office and the DMV.  “Can’t stop, won’t stop,” she told herself.  Then she slowed as she spotted something ahead—an alley.  She would have usually thought about the shady creatures one may or may not call humans that lurk in such places, but as her adrenaline was rushing, she had no time to think about the monsters in the alleysl  Just when it was too late, she remembered her untied shoe and everything went black.
