Ode to Winter

Ode to Winter

A Poem by Bridea Mai

Lace decorates the earth with sparkling crystals

Dancing across fields, bowing to the wind.

A blanket of light reflects

The suns magnificent rays.

A shroud engulfs the crusted surface

Resting in its ghastly peace

Until beyond all miraculous things

The shroud shrugs off, the body has wings.

All is calm, the ground sighs in its sleep

Little ones cuddle against those they love

Slumbering into the land of unceasing night

Where only their dreams, not instinct, take flight.

Beauty graces the world

Her majesty rules with an iron fist

Stay too long in her presence

And feel her wrath nipping at your toes.

The world becomes a burial ground

For all is dead, quiet, still.

Holding its breath

For a miracle.  Will it come?

These solemn days turn into months

Waiting, waiting.  Waiting on a sign.

The trees shiver, bare

Solemnly standing in a line.

Bare until the day when all things

Have new beginnings

The sunshine laughs once again

Caterpillars break free from cocoons with butterfly wings

Birds sing with childlike gaiety

total abandonment, this is home.

Where life begins, the journey ahead

Rid of the bonds of winter that’s dead.
