A Nothingness, Burned

A Nothingness, Burned

A Poem by Brian M. Peeples

I stared into a mirror,

and saw nothing.

Though I stood there,

something still missing;

it must have been an error,

a simple mistake.

I could not recall a memory

of ever seeing my face.

A faceless man, lost at sea,

and unable to breathe,

trapped in outer space.

...I knew then that my life was

at stake.

The mirror had shattered,

and I was now afloat;

broken shards all over,

not that it mattered, anyway.

I had nothing more to say,

and no other place to go.

I was lost, in a way,

lost at sea.

I did, however,

come across a key.

A key to my sickly memories,

that would force me to

turn the lever

and fall through space,

forever.

The key had been a lie,

and the mirror did not exist.

My memories were fake,

as I was always so blind.

I could not see,

nor could I resist.

My mind twisted and turned,

and eventually

it burned.

I like it, it has the feel of someone who can't piece all the fragments of life together to make sense of things and so floats through life now in waves of limbo. Good to see you again Brian.
