If Only You Knew

If Only You Knew

A Poem by Brian M. Peeples

Falling away,

I breathe.

My words...

are. broken. cut.

I can’t speak. eat.

or sleep.

And if I write,

I may write lies.

And lie there alone,

counting. sheep.

One. Two. Three.

as I close my eyes

for the

very. last. time.

No longer able to breathe,

I am still"

falling. away.

And the tears still swim

down my face.

Every. Night.

And I realize. now.

I have"

lost. my. place,

and the ability to.

contemplate.

what. it. is...

about. your. life.

that makes me engage

in. conversation.

with. you.

And then. I noticed.

your. smile.

and then I knew...

If only.

you. knew. too.
