The Lady Wore WhiteA Poem by writingforfunBased on an actual occurrence recently. Made me wonder. ( still does!)The Lady wore White. ( based on a true occurrence) The bus pulled in and she got on, paid and came inside. Alone. A middle-aged lady with long white hair She stood near the front rather than take a seat . She glanced down the bus then turned her back, her face expressionless. Her clothes spoke for her. A white ribbon in her hair. A white silk scarf draped around her neck. A white handbag hung from her shoulder. A long white dress with white belt around her slender waist. White gloves held a white carrier bag, Dior. I wanted to look inside. She had short white socks But her feet placed inside a pair of stylish beige shoes, Slightly incongruous I thought. Further observations were cut abruptly short As she alighted just after just three stops And crossed the road towards a block of flats near where I lived. A white witch? A woman in mourning who chose this as a way to celebrate a loved one’s life? Perhaps all her clothes were white? Easy to get dressed in the morning! Two days later I walked past the flats On my way to the newsagent. I felt strangely compelled to glance at the flat on the ground floor of the block. Inside was a figure behind white lacy curtains Not easy to see. The wall painted white and white fittings and fixtures. A white table lamp stood on a white table. She wore a white dressing gown and was sat down with a book ‘The white Queen’ ? ‘The white princess’? ‘Snow White’?. I pondered for a moment . Don’t stare. Was she there at all ? © 2015 writingforfunAuthor's Note
