Friendship

Written after the death of one of my best friends

A friend is hard to lose,
A close friend most of all.
By simple circumstance or death,
It's hard to say good-bye.

A friend is hard to get rid of,
They pass every trial and test.
A friend is hard to shake,
They know your worst and best.

A friend is hard to come by,
not like a crazy family guest,
A friend is hard to lose,
especially to the hand of death.

No one ever talks about what it means to break up with a best friend, and this is a great way of putting it. Especially since it describes whether voluntarily or involuntarily, "a friend is hard to lose". I especially love the line "a friend is hard to shake", which is true. Sometimes you can be incredibly put off by the actions of a close friend, but you stick by them anyway. Sometimes people ask "why are we friends?" It's all about that connection. Great poem, great message.
