Also-rans Also Run

Also-rans Also Run

A Poem by John B. Bolling

Pain rages inside of me

Teeth gnawing at my soul

Riddled with holes

A sharp-edge poker raked through coals ignites me

The burning festers

Smoldering ash and tinder

I'm a blender

A concoction of crushed dreams and lukewarm nightmares

They are never that bad

Not enough to wake me up, anyway

While I may be sleep deprived

It won't eat me alive

Unless that red-hot poker of harrowing hurt beckons from afar

Even in a car

Speed cannot escape the inevitable truth

The unborn lie in wait of revelation

Trapped under expectations and hands taking hold

They are all cold

Dirty fingernails and callouses

Let go

Accept the destiny of unproven negatives and abstention

No intervention

The highest power isn't watching the pawns below

Like a TV show we're just a rerun

One more also-ran also run
