Summertime NightmareA Poem by John B. Bolling07/07/09
Desire never weaker, future never bleaker,
Circumstances now beyond my control.
Failure never greater, fate is catered,
Trapped in the gravity of a black hole.
Another morning older, another shoulder colder,
I am the bearer of orders short and tall.
One day astonished, tomorrow admonished,
I am the sudden breach in the wall.
Evening approaches, time encroaches,
My will erodes with the sun’s fall.
Nights never darker, my heart never starker,
I pray for the devil to leave me in peace.
All around me, ghosts surround me,
Astound me with their transparency.
In my dreams, I hear screams,
Demeaning the courage now gone.
The volume grows, massive echoes,
In the throes of an imagined storm.
So frightening, ball lightning,
Inviting every fear to the fore.
Body will shiver, mind will quiver,
Here to harvest what I reap.
Heart now racing, fleeting thoughts pacing,
Another nightmare keeps me from sleep.
Feel no victory, fear only misery,
Certain the cycle will repeat.
Breaths shallow, a pill swallowed,
Eyes flutter as the tears spread.
Give me soma, bring on the coma,
Bury me inside my head.
