Sailor's Grave

Sailor's Grave

A Poem by John B. Bolling

Fortified memories in a brilliant enclave

A field of roses surrounds a barren grave

Romance whirlwind and full of promise

Only to disappear in a solvent abyss

A rectangle composed of oak and pine

The path of least resistance is serpentine

Avoid challenges and faulty assumptions

Ignorance is the most blissful of functions

Like being blindfolded with a gun in hand

Pull the trigger at an observer’s command

Individualism can only result in failure

Leave the tumultuous ocean to the sailors

Amidst the tempest all hands disengage

In futility they sink beneath the waves
