Glances

Glances

A Poem by Barrett

What other word could be used to describe
The feeling when I lift my eyes upward
And find
Yours are right there
Meeting mine with quiet intensity
Meeting mine like a target acquired
Meeting mine like the flick of a switch
What other word,
Besides magnetic?

Such small glances
Such serene secret moments
Brilliant, but doomed

These small glances are sad glances
Sad because your hand is not mine to hold
Sad because your laugh is not mine to hear
Sad because your eyes are not mine to meet

But please, don't stop looking.

Transfixed... every line brings back memories. Everyone would identify with these feelings.
