"Well, hello there."A Chapter by brendersonChapter Two
I thought a lot last night, and I was still a little scared. Mostly, I was excited. Completing this mission could up my rank, which could come in handy. Maybe when I got back I’d lay low for a while, take a break from missions or something like that. But before I could do that, I had to get this over with.
I walked towards the gate, with Tom and a few other agents by my side. I turned towards them,
“When I get back, I want a higher rank, and a cake,” Tom laughed,
“Maybe we’ll arrange that, don’t forget to report every once
in a while on your walkie-talkie. Only when you’re alone, and only when you
have information.”
I turned and began walking to the gate, turning around after I’d walked out. “Bye guys!” I called, and quickly regretted it. These things were attracted to sound, something I need to remember from now on. I shrugged to myself and continued walking. I remember how to get to the city; it’s basically a one road walk. It shouldn’t take too long.
The road to the city looked nothing like I’d thought it would be. It was clear, and clean. No infected in sight, which scared me a little. “If they aren’t here, where are they,” I whispered to myself.
Why wouldn’t the Insiders stay here, where the infected aren’t, I thought, however I didn’t see any houses or structures in the woods, so maybe that was why.
It didn’t take long before I neared the city, “Oh my,” I stopped.
There were tons of them, maybe a hundred, on just the main road. No going through there, I thought. I looked around; the buildings were pretty close together. Not too high either. I quickly ran to the back of one of the stores, desperately looking for a way to the top. There was a half broken ladder, but I couldn’t reach it. I saw a trash can, and rushed over to it, dumping the contents out. I brought it to the ladder and set it down. As I began climbing it, something grabbed my foot.
“Crap, crap, crap” I looked down, infected had followed me.
I tried shaking my leg free, but it had a strong grip on it. I reached under my dress and took my knife out of its sheath, bending down to put it through the things head, and began climbing again. “That was a close one.”
Now on top of the building I could see the roads better. The main road was littered with them, but there was another one that was a little better. I walked to the edge of the roof, wondering if I could make the jump to the next building. “Couldn’t hurt to try,” I said aloud, but really it could hurt to try.
I backed up a little, and began running. I’d never been afraid of heights, but I guess you could say I’m afraid of falling into a group of infected. I jumped, and hoped for the best. My boot hit the edge of the next roof, and I fell onto my knees. I let out a breath, and turned to lie on my back. I stayed like that for a few seconds before sitting up to inspect my knees. They were scraped up pretty badly; I poured water on them to clean them and got up again.
“Might be best not to try that again, at least for now.”
I looked around; I could get to the other road now, the one with less infected. There was only one problem, there wasn’t a ladder. The drop wasn’t too bad, so I went for it. I sat down near the edge and pushed myself off. My boots made a small noise when they hit the pavement, but it didn’t draw their attention. Gripping my knife tightly, I began walking. Stabbing the infected in the brain when they came close, puncturing the brain was the only way they could be killed.
After a bit of walking, the road became clear of the infected, and instead of shops and buildings there were houses. The sun was beginning to set, so I settled for one. I cleared all the rooms and made sure the locks worked. I grabbed out my walkie-talkie,
“This is Cass; I’ve found shelter for the night.”
“Alright, any sign of the Insiders?” I heard Tom’s voice,
“None yet, I’ll inform you when I do.”
“Clear.”
I threw it in my backpack, and plopped down on a bed, falling asleep shortly after.

I don’t know when I woke up, all I know is that I did, and that something had woken me. A noise, maybe, there was no other explanation. It was still night, with no sign that the sun was soon to come. I lay still in the bed, waiting to hear if there would be another sound. After a few minutes of silence, I turned and tried to go back to sleep. This time, when I heard the noise, I could describe it,
A window opening, I looked over towards my window, which was still closed. It must be coming from another room, I thought. I reached my hand toward my bag and grabbed my knife and gun. I sat them under my pillow and turned towards the door, pretending to sleep. I heard a thud, and then silence for a few moments before footsteps. I don’t think infected can climb, I mean, I hope they can’t climb. They didn’t follow me up the ladder earlier, and I don’t think they’d know I was here, so many thoughts raced through my mind.
The door to the room opened slightly, and my breath hitched, just act like you’re dead or something, I thought to myself. Someone walked in, they didn’t look infected, and they certainly didn’t walk like they were. I gripped my gun, ready to jump up when they noticed me. The person turned, and stared at me for a few seconds,
