Of Fallen Toy Soldiers

Of Fallen Toy Soldiers

A Poem by Kaden L.
"

Dom has a message for his mom.

"

Dear Mom,

It’s your son, Dom

I really hope you get this

This will be my last state of bliss

Before I fall like the rest

Oh, it’s just the best

How’s everything been?

Did Mike’s team get a win?

Or did he and Ben lose?

If so, that’s a bomb to diffuse

Sorry, I got carried away

I just want today to be a good day

It isn't looking like that, though

Stupidly, I decided to go solo

And Corner myself

With nowhere to go

Now, I’m just here

All alone without even one peer

I hope no one’s near

The fear everyone has had

Has been a tad overwhelming

Considering that we’re all being knocked over

Like a kid’s toy soldier

Honestly, a hangover would be preferable

Over hearing constant wailing and yelling

I ain't that durable

Oh, sorry again

I didn’t mean to overload you

I’m not much of a man

This place is like a zoo

Except with with guns and violence

I’ve never experienced anything like this

Oh, God!

I think someone is near!

I have nowhere to go!

I need to keep rhyming

With rhythm and timing

But I just can’t bear this anymore!

I’m tired of all this, uh

War!

A couple hours ago, a friend of mine promised to live

So he could see his mother

Then, he got his head blown off

To me, he was like a brother

Or something, I don’t know

Oh, MAMA!

Where are you?

I don’t wanna be a soldier anymore

No more!

All I keep seeing is blood and gore

Left and right there’s death

And there’s me

About to breathe my last breath

Oh, MAMA!

I wanna go home!

I don’t wanna do this!

No more!

No more!

No mo-

Like "The Red Badge of Courage," this one puts us down in the midst of war, reflecting the terror that grips the heart of one facing imminent death. Those who survive scenes like these relive them later in their nightmares.
