An introduction to the main character, Serina K.

Hi, my name is Serina Moore. I am in the third grade. Most people call me Serina K. There is a girl in my class named Serina Mitchell. Our teacher, Mrs. Crocker, calls her Serina M. and calls me Serina K. to avoid confusion. Since she can’t call both of us Serina M., Mrs. Crocker asked me if it was ok to call me by my first name and middle initial. I told her that it was ok. It can still be somewhat confusing because my full name is Serina Kay Moore. At home, I’m referred to as Serina or Serina Kay. Even though it might look as if Serina K. and Serina Kay are pronounced the same, they are not at all alike. I hear them both all the time and have developed a keen sense of hearing to distinguish the two. There is no doubt that my full middle name is being exclaimed when I hear my dad yell, “Serina Kay!” My dad is the only person that uses my middle name. He calls me by my first and middle names when I am in trouble. Nothing major. He usually wants me to clean my room or something. As long as I don’t hear him shout, “Serina Kay Moore!” That’s another story altogether.

I guess that I am just an average third grader. I want to grow up to be a veterinarian, a scientist, and a chef like Emeril on the Food Network. My dad says that I’ll need a PhD if I want to do all of that. I don’t know what a PhD is, but I’m sure that I can find one at Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart has everything. After I become a chef like Emeril, I want to work in the bakery there.

My dad will only let me have one pet, our dog Suzy. He says that one pet is enough because it is a lot of work to take care of it. When I grow up, I want a house full of animals. I want at least four dogs, two cats, and some horses. At my house, each dog will have its own bedroom. The cats can share a bedroom. I can keep the horses in my backyard.

There is a rich doctor outside of town who has millions of animals at his house. He has buffalo, a giraffe, llamas, tall birds with long necks, and even a few zebras. My dad said it must have cost him a fortune to import all of the animals that he has. Dad says that my best bet is to become a veterinarian if I want to be around lots of animals. Being a veterinarian sounds like fun. I could take care of dogs and cats all the time. Once, when we took Suzy to get his shots, I saw a man with some horses in a trailer hooked up to his truck outside. The veterinarian guy came outside with a large needle. We went inside to register at the desk, so I didn’t get to see what he did to the horse. I’m not sure if I want to give shots to the animals or not. That seems like that would hurt them. I know that it hurts when I get a shot. That sure was a long needle the veterinarian had.

If I have time between being a chef and a veterinarian, I’d also like to be a scientist. I love to mix potions, look at weird stuff through my microscope, and use my telescope to look at the moon and stars. On a clear night, I can see all kinds of cool stars with my telescope. Dad told me that most of the stars and planets were named after people in Greek myths. He tried to explain some story about how the Andromeda Galaxy got its name, but it seemed really boring. When I asked why the Milky Way was named after a candy bar, he laughed and reminded me that I need to study hard if I want to be a scientist and a veterinarian.

My Uncle Tom told me that most scientific discoveries happen by accident. I don’t understand why I would have to study to make a mistake. I shouldn’t have to study much to be a chef either. I’ve already made a cake by following the directions on the back of the box. I’ve even made chocolate pretzels with my chocolate factory kit.

My dad says that I’ll definitely have to study to become a veterinarian. He said that it was basically like being a doctor. I just don’t know if I can give those poor animals shots. Besides, I’ll probably be too busy being a chef and scientist to have time to study to become a veterinarian anyway.

Yes that is pretty much the way a third graders mind works. I worked with that age group for many years. They seldom see limitations to what they could be. I enjoyed reading your story.
