Building Blocks

Building Blocks

A Chapter by Rosalie Santerino
"

Explains my fear of heights.

"

Climbing on the building blocks

High into the plastic sky

Skimming multi coloured rocks

Which then were standing twice her size

Skips along the rows in reams

With burst of childhood joy

But those squeals became screams

Caused by older misbehaving boys

Patents boots hit a thrown tennis ball

And soon she with a high-pitched cry

Slipped and stumbled began to fall

And proved that five year olds can’t fly

In an instant cliffs and coloured blocks

That used to give her endless joy

Are jagged, scary, rainbow rocks

Are banned forever, no longer toys

So now when I walk on cliff top paths

It comes with instant screams and tears

For appearing from the distant past

A memory of that childhood fear
