Grandma Rosie

Grandma Rosie

A Poem by Bonita
"

It's okay to love that way.

"

Grandma Rosie died today.
She'd made my wedding cake
Chile rellenos in cast iron
I marveled at her gift
Her house smelled of Clorox
Her persona clean, immaculate
I had loved her from a distance.
Keeping only the good clips
Good memories set aside
Step-grandma did her best.

I heard my mother cry today
For a mom she never knew
"She never held me."
Mom had said.
Her broken voice, perplexed.
Mom cried for The mother, she
Longed to have...
Replacement for desertion
A reason for her fate
She cried for a woman who
Beat her down.
Apologized too late.

Heart arrhythmia, they said.
It happened in her sleep.
I held the phone, detached
upset.
Grasping for a memory,
A way to keep
A connection – A way to stay
Away
It's okay to love from a distance
Mom,
It's okay to love that way
