Hungry

Hungry

A Poem by Bob Sherunkle
"

low and hungry

"
Empty of pocket,
Belly shrinking by the minute.
I walk by the window with the lady with the silver locket.
Dazzled by her Mastercard and in awe of the china,
heartbroken at the sight of your picky palet.
"I'll eat it !", I scream,as if my heart burst,or my belly does..
You look right through me.
Smile.
Take it away !
you motion to the minion of the masses.
Smile.
Heartless.
I'm not sub human...i'm f****n not..I'm just hungry

Hahahaha. I love the special mention of the Mastercard and the china. Clearly, it is so damn hard being hungry and watching un-hungry people go about on their own, doing what they do leisurely, without a mind in the world and without the anxiety of ever going broke and ever going hungry. Never low and hungry. Oftentimes, just hungry. :)

Unfortunately there is truth to your words - sad to say... The number of homeless people is rapidly growing - it's heartbreaking to see how many are completely ignored or looked down upon - Is there an answer to feeding the hungry in our communities, in our country - I wish I had the answer.

Thank's for reading.
Its a "me first" world. I remember one guy begging on the streets, had face covering tattoos, and when I rolled down my window to hand him a dollar, me eating a burger, he asked if I had any extra food. Nearly floored me, and put any selfishness that I might have felt right out the window, along with the burger that I just bought. Gave it to him. He needed it more. I had a few bucks in my pocket to go buy more. He obviously did not. Never forgot that lesson. I'm sitting here in my chair, and its all come back again. Thanks Bob. I appreciate the reminder.

Compassion is all too lacking, in "civilization". Selfish pursuits are in. We find the poor and hungry invisible, as we go about our daily lives. I've known the type of hunger, where I just manage to scrape together something from nothing, in the pantry. My moods weren't the best in those times. Perhaps that emotional projection of hunger, makes others see us as sub-human. Excellent portrayal!

Thanks Catlen.
Supercilious slimeballs viewing life through a filter of falsified perfection, deleting anything from their vision that doesn't agree with their idyll. It's *their* existence that is sub-human, because humanity is defined by compassion, not ignorance. Excellent poem Bob :)
