Bar Room Belle

Bar Room Belle

A Poem by Bob Sherunkle
"

Floating into my life like a fly in my beer

"
Kicking and screaming like a newborn you were,
when I first adjusted my bleary, souless windows.

Like a bright light cast,
a fallen, forgotten angel, shining through the neon and swirling Pall Mall trails.
Doll sized fists,cut and scarred.

I am in love !..I thought.
I have been searching for you all my miserable days,
and here you are under my purple, ballooned honk.

I buy you a drink,
you growl and sneer.
I say " Shut up...and drink your goddamn beer".
You smile like a lion that's just been tamed,
realising now,you have been claimed.

I brush the straggle to show your face,
Porcelin but cracked,
white as snow,fair and innocent.

You drifted away like a dead leaf in a river,
swallowed by a strangers promises.

I hope every time I walk through that door,
you'll be there in a haze of smoke,
shining like the last goddess on earth.

Another great story told in your unique way. I was imagining myself sitting alone in the bar watching you and your new-found "love". Beer in hand I smiled at first but at the end I wanted to buy you a beer to cheer you up. Great poem.

Oh thanks Lourisa,i'm having one at the moment!
Ha! This was enlightening. I'm sure most of us have fallen in love with a stranger in a bar once or twice haha :) Not me, of course, but some of us. *ahem*

Lovely imagery, and killer use of words. Loved it from beginning to the goddamn last drop.

Hey Katie,Many thanks,at least someone found it funny! Glad you like it.
Heaven, torn from our grasp. A fleeting taste before paradise sets below the horizon. The fall hurts so much only because we flew so high. Our hearts can know no pain only if we never love.
Lovely Bob. Just bloody lovely. :)

That last stanza is a killer - great imagery, especially after the prior stanza. From a dead leaf to a goddess - very nice!
