how we used to be

how we used to be

A Poem by ashley

nostalgia keeps us together,

our secrets keep us together.

are we low maintenance

or are we just drifitng apart?

are we splitting at the seams unknowingly?

will the scarf soon unravel into nothing?

will the yarn ever join together again like how it used to be,

or will it just be a memory of something that once was?

something to reminisce on?

I liked the kind of wistful tone of this. It was just the right balance of “this thing is happening and it’s not necessarily great” without being too melodramatic. Not that being melodramatic is bad but sometimes as poets we do slip into it a little too easily.
Before my next comments I feel like it’s important to note that I do not knit and do not know how to, just as a disclaimer in case it’s completely wrong. To me it very much felt like knitting/crochet. Like the bonds are there but they’re not necessarily the strongest and can be easily unraveled if not handled with care and attention. That once felt like a cool “low maintenance” relationship was really just two people no longer being the most compatible. lol I feel like I have the idea so clearly in my head and I am in no way conveying it. You did not have that problem here, which is good. Your words built the scene quite effectively for me. Thank you for sharing this.
