A Child

A Child

A Poem by txgerlxly
"

This is a little free-write I did a while ago to get my creative juices flowing. Don't mind if it's horrible.

"

a child growing up,

now this one’s difficult to tell

until he is in fact grown

because there are so many

ups and downs to life

that one should not simply

pick one

and call it

the climax.

there are so many

that you cannot write the story

until it is finished

because one day

he will be happy

and the next

he will be sad

and the next

he will be angry

so you can never know for sure

until you’ve lived your life

and it has indeed ended

so when you are old

and reflecting upon

“the good old times”

when it only cost

a dollar fifty for candy

and you could purchase

an entire meal

for just ninety-nine cents

with all of your friends

and you’re all old

and wrinkly

and happy

then you can write your story

even though

it is still not ended,

it is indeed much closer.

so for one day,

just take a step back

and think.

think about what you will

be reflecting on

in seventy years.

what will you laugh at?

what will cause

a pang in your ancient heart?

what will make you wish

that you had done something

differently than you had?

but don’t you fear,

and don’t you fret,

for everything that you do

is what has lead you

up to this point

in your much valued life

so do not wish you had done

anything differently

than you have

because if you did indeed

do something different

you may not be sitting

around the cozy fire

with old friends

cracking jokes

and telling stories

i know you may feel crushed

i know you may feel sad

but don’t you worry darling

everything will turn out alright

in the end.

don’t worry about the future

until you really need to

just worry about right now.

make your future self proud

make your future self smile

at the thought of your actions

that you have committed today.

make your future old friends

laugh and agree

that you all had a good life

and make that start today

don’t let your precious life

waste away

with the sands of time

but make it worth remembering

make it worth the work

that you’ve put forth

don’t give up now

you have so much

to look forward to

don’t make your future

friends wish that they

could have done something

when there’s nothing

that they could have done.

instead,

make them proud

to have been

friends with you,

the greatest person

in your world.

the protagonist

to your story

and

the best supporting character

in someone else’s

live to be one hundred,

live to be forty-five,

but don’t let

one second

of your life

be wasted

on counter-productivity

so i guess the point is

that you should definitely

live life to its fullest

and take time

to write your story

once you do.
