The prisoner in the yardA Poem by BAMBE ABASS ABIDEMIHatred begots slavery as love begots freedomCut him two, three or more And tame him to bleed in your will As he works the farm with Patience Watering the seedlings of harvest With his blood, tears and sweat Before your father clayed up His father toiled this land Astride the unicorn your father So do you, and him below Flourishing from generation to generation Under the generous cuts of your generations Each toil to him Is a blessing to near the ancestors And to you a duty on your innocent prisoner Is he or they taught you he is? Run the memory of how the hatred begins And see the prisoner in the yard. © 2023 BAMBE ABASS ABIDEMI |
