![]() Ending: Chapter NineA Chapter by master squiggles![]() Note: I think Sparrow might be high in this chapter... but it goes away soon. xD![]() I'm standing still, I'm oh, so peaceful I can't pretend, that I'm fine I get so ill, crazy agitated When I've not really died - I Can't Do This by Plumb Sparrow's eyes shot open the next morning, as they always did when he had a dream like that. Well, technically, it was a nightmare. He was used to the morning routine of waking up scared for his life and realizing that it had been a dre -- nightmare -- and then going to Moon or Opaque about it. There wasn't much difference this morning in his routine, except he didn't tell anyone about it. Sparrow had nothing planned for today, at all. They had last hunted a few days ago, but they hadn't hunted together as a pack for a while now. The younger hunters were the ones who went hunting the most, because Sparrow didn't want to go on a more experienced hunt without Sapphire. Therefore, no one else was going besides the younger wolves, because Sparrow could trust that they would be fine if they did what he told them to. Sparrow was still afraid of losing another from the pack. Sparrow walked out of his den when the sun started to rise, not very long after he woke up. Yesterday and his dream were still fresh on his mind, but he chose to ignore them as best as he could by trying to start up a conversation with the first wolf he saw when leaving his den, which was Sunset. "Morning," he told her, and she replied with a nudge to his shoulder. "So... how are the pups?" Sunset smiled. "They're doing fine, but it doesn't seem like you to worry." "I know," Sparrow said proudly. Sunset cocked her head, confused, but she didn't say anything. Turning, she started to go into the nursery, and Sparrow followed her nonchalantly. When she turned and looked at him questionably, Sparrow replied with a shrug. "I just want to see them," he said. "Any problems?" "...No," Sunset told him, still a bit confused on why he was being so social this morning. Sparrow was the most anti-social wolf in this pack, besides Storm, anyway. Pretty much everyone else in the pack spent most of their day outside of their dens talking to the others and socializing, even if the pack was doing that day such as hunting. They reached the pups not long after, after walking inside the den. The four pups were huddled up on the floor of the den, squirming around and squealing several times. "...What are their names, again?" Sparrow asked Sunset quickly, having forgotten since he hadn't seen them in quite a while now. "Ginger, Scarlett, Copper, Birch," Sunset told him, gesturing towards each pup as she said their name. Ginger looked like a pup version of Sunset, Scarlett was darker than Sunset, Copper was more tan than reddish orange, and Birch was a dark tan color. Sparrow sighed impatiently - since Sunset's pups were too differently colored to get an accurate guess, he had a feeling it would be a while until Sunset admitted who her mates had been. Sparrow nodded in response, still thinking about who Sunset's mate was. The thought went away, however, when one of the pups coughed. Sparrow looked at Sunset questionably, who said nothing at first. She finally replied, "Moon said that they were disease and injury-free, but... Ginger has been coughing a bit lately." Sparrow didn't appear very concerned. "That's Moon's fault, then," he said innocently, blinking at her. "She should be okay... After all, we've all coughed before and we haven't died." Sunset rolled her eyes. "I meant that she seems a bit sick to me," she replied coolly, used to putting up with Sparrow's constant sarcasm. "She's just been coughing, and she's sneezing once or twice, but... I don't think there are any diseases going around." Sparrow shrugged. "The season." Sunset nodded thoughtfully. "That could be true," she admitted. "But... Moon said that --" "THAT DOESN'T MATTER," Sparrow said slowly, looking at Sunset with wide eyes. "My point is, it's probably just the whole... spring...ness. You know? In the spring, we all get a bit... sick-ish." "...Okay," Sunset replied, also used to putting up with Sparrow's so-called "knowledge" about things. "But..." "You know what?" Sparrow interrupted. "Forget you! The pups are fine, it's just the spring stuff that happens EVERY YEAR, and... yeah. I think you get the point, Sunset. I'm going to go and bother someone else now. You're no fun." He left dramatically, Sunset rolling her eyes behind him. Sparrow left the nursery in a hurry, as if he actually had something to do that morning. Of course, that was a lie, so technically Sparrow had no point of running whatsoever. He didn't feel like visiting Sapphire today. It had been almost three weeks since the fire, yet Sapphire was still the same as she was the day after it. She wasn't getting better, but she wasn't getting worse, either, so Sparrow really didn't need to visit her. Most of the reason that Sparrow didn't want to go see her, however, was because he was in a better mood this morning, better than the past few years or so. Sparrow's attention shifted slowly over to Opaque minutes after he left the nursery. She had been eating a now unable to recognize animal, something which had been small and furry before Opaque ripped it apart. She was underneath a tree a few feet to the left of the nursery, and Sparrow hadn't noticed her until then. She made no attempt of speaking to him as she ate, as if she was in a trance. Again. "Hello," Sparrow greeted her, and Opaque looked up casually. "Morning," she replied back quietly. "How are the pups?" "Sunset's?" "Yes." "Oh, they're fine," Sparrow said coolly. "Sunset is too unintelligent to realize that Ginger is simply going through spring-fever-like symptoms..." "What. Are. You. Talking. About?!" "...I don't know. I'm just saying big words to make myself sound smart." Opaque scoffed in response. Her brother was being more egotistical than usual. "What's wrong with Ginger?" "Sick," Sparrow responded. "Well, no. That's what SUNSET thinks, but she is wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong. It's just that thing that happens to us all in the spring... I don't know what it is though." "Neither do I," Opaque replied. Wanting to change the topic, she asked Sparrow a question. "Are you coming the next time that I see Hurricane?" "Maybe. ...When WAS the last time you saw Hurricane?" "Um," Opaque gulped. "Last night." "Oh," Sparrow replied coolly. "Alone?" "Yes." "Oh," Sparrow said again, sitting down in front of Opaque. Suddenly, his eyes bulged until they nearly popped out of their sockets. "You WHAT?!" Opaque flinched after Sparrow jumped up suddenly, started to walk furiously into the center of the clearing where the direction of the valley - also known as where the two last met with Hurricane - and, with an expression of pure horror on his face, turned around to face his sister. "You... you...?! How...? You and... he... did you... really...?!" Opaque frowned, getting up and wandering over to her brother in case he decided to randomly run off and find Hurricane and kill him. "...Yes, yes, and... yes," she admitted, embarrassed and afraid for her mate's life at the same time. "...Yes." Sparrow growled, and Opaque snapped at him as soon as he tried to head off towards the valley. "NO," she ordered. "You can't tell me what to do, and I have some business to take care of." "What?" Opaque asked, swallowing. "I'm gonna kill him," was Sparrow's evil response. "NO!" Sparrow took off as soon as he finished his sentence, causing Opaque to tear off after him, feeling so stupid that she had even came up with that topic. But shouldn't Sparrow be happy? She was going to have pups, which would extend the pack's population. Isn't that what Sparrow wanted? Apparently not. They got to the valley before Opaque knew it, and her fears were highlighted when she swore that she saw Hurricane down by the lake, not knowing that Sparrow was coming to rip him apart. She stopped, and jumped forward as far as she could, reaching her target - Sparrow - and sighing in relief. She landed on top of him, causing him to skid to a stop and flip over, landing on his back and almost crushing Opaque in the process. He attempted to get up, but Opaque pushed him off of her and stood over top of him, glaring down. "He's over there, and I'm not letting you kill him." Seeing the two snarl at each other, Hurricane became curious and started to approach, but Opaque gave out a warning snarl. "Don't come any closer," she warned to him. "He'll kill you." Sparrow managed to push Opaque off of him when she spoke and loosened her grip, nearly flying forwards in rage. Sensing that he should probably duck to avoid being pummeled by the black wolf, Hurricane's eyes widened and he ducked seconds before Sparrow landed within reach. Opaque ran over to the side of her mate, growling and shielding him with her body as Sparrow got up from the hard landing, shaking himself to get the dirt off of him. He rolled his eyes, appearing not as angry anymore. "You will explain this to me," he fumed, "now." "Explain what...?" Hurricane whispered to Opaque. "You. Mated. With her," Sparrow snarled. Hurricane and Opaque looked at each other, thinking of what to say. Opaque spoke up. "But I'll have pups..." "Which could kill you," Sparrow pointed out. "Whatever." Sparrow rolled his eyes. "Look, I... I assume that I can't prevent you two from... that... but... don't do it. Ever. Again." Opaque grinned sheepishly, and Hurricane smirked. "We won't," the two responded simultaneously. "...And, Opaque," Sparrow added, "...I am not helping with taking care of the pups whatsoever. You're on your own with this one..." © 2012 master squigglesAuthor's Note
