who I am - Lacrymosa by Evanescence
For the hundredth time that day, Sparrow left his den.
After he had regained consciousness completely, that was the first time that he left his den after the dream. He was shaking quite severely as he made his way into the clearing, his breathing still coming out in short gasps as his eyes met with his sister’s.
“Sparrow?” Opaque looked at him seriously, her eyes grave with worry. “...What happened?”
Sparrow shook his head shortly, not wanting to talk about that at the moment where he was easily going to be heard by another wolf that he didn’t trust quite as much. “Nothing,” he responded, gulping quickly so it wouldn’t be as noticeable.
But Opaque saw it. “Sparrow,” she told him sternly, “tell me what’s bothering you.”
Sparrow growled defensively. “No.”
Opaque was more persistent than Sparrow remembered her being, because she continued attempting to coax him into telling her. “Sparrow,” she said weakly, getting tired of arguing with him over something as simple as this. “Come into my den, and we can talk about it in there.”
Sparrow sighed. “Fine,” he replied, an uninterested tone in his voice.
Opaque’s eyes lit up, happy that she had finally reasoned with him, and she led him to the den she had originally shared with Sapphire. But now that Sapphire was spending most of the time in Moon’s den recovering (or so they hoped), Opaque had the den all to herself. Sitting down and crossing her front paws over top of one another, she waited for Sparrow to sit as well. But he remained standing, glancing nervously towards the den entrance.
“Sparrow,” Opaque said suddenly, startling him. “We’re alone. Now talk.”
Sighing impulsively, Sparrow collapsed down next to her, straightening up cautiously when he heard a rustle in a bush nearby the den.
“There’s nothing out there that’s going to come in,” Opaque told him firmly. “Now, tell me why you looked so nervous when you left your den.”
Sparrow rolled his eyes. “I didn’t want Moon to hear,” Sparrow told his sister. “She has enough to worry about right now, with Sapphire...” He trailed off.
“Don’t worry about Sapphire,” Opaque said. “Unless it involves her, of course... what you were thinking about.”
“I wasn’t thinking about...” Sparrow gave an impulsive snarl. “I had another dream, alright?”
Opaque’s eyes darkened. “About who?”
Sparrow’s face fell even more. “Err... Isis...”
The black she-wolf groaned. “What happened this time?”
Sparrow raised an “eyebrow.” “What do you mean, ‘this time?’ I haven’t told you about any dreams lately.”
Opaque fell silent. “...I can tell when something’s bothering you,” she said quietly. “It’s like I know. It’s not just your reactions to things, but it’s also... you know, what you’re doing. If you’re being more anti-social than you usually are, I know that you’re worrying about something.”
Sparrow’s face contorted into a look of disgust. “When am I not worrying about something?”
“You’re right...”
Sighing, Sparrow started to stand up. “I’m going to go... I don’t know... see how Sunset and her new pups are. They’re not very old... a few weeks, I think. I just need to get my mind off of this, so...”
“Wait,” Opaque interrupted. “What happened in the dream?”
“...She killed me.”

By the time he managed to get away from Opaque, Sparrow was in pain. That was mostly because he tripped over a rock while running away from her and flipped over, causing Opaque to skid to a stop but fall as well. He knew that she was concerned for him and that she wasn’t annoying him purposely, but Sparrow wanted and needed his space. He was tired of being worried about by the wolves in his pack, especially Opaque and Moon, but they had a reason. They were only worried about him, but it was secretly getting on his nerves.
“Sunset... how are they?”
Looking up quickly, Sunset was resting in the nursery alone. “The pups? They’re in Moon’s den. She’s making sure they don’t have any diseases or injuries yet, considering that they wouldn’t survive at this age if they got sick.”
“I see.” Sparrow frowned down at her. “I have a question for you, though.”
Sunset swallowed, trying to make in as unnoticeable as possible. “...What?”
“Who is your mate?”
Her mouth dropped open as she heard Sparrow’s words. Looking down at the ground, Sunset would have blushed if she was capable of blushing. “...My... mate?”
Looking back up, she was surprised to see that Sparrow looked slightly amused. “Yes.”
Sunset frowned. “I don’t know.”
Sparrow choked back a laugh as he heard her answer. “You don’t know? How do you not know something like that?”
Sunset cracked a smile. “...Well...”
Really, she was lying. She knew quite well who her mate was, but she wasn’t comfortable with telling anyone about it yet. She didn’t even think that Moon knew who her mate was, her most recent one at least. Well, Moon probably assumed who her mate was, but never said anything.
“Your pups are... ginger like you, but lighter. Lighter than that. Tell me who it is!”
Sunset shook her head firmly. “He’s not from this pack... he’s a loner, actually...”
Sparrow smirked. “It’s Blizzard.”
Sunset grimaced. “No! It’s not.”
Sparrow laughed again. “He’s white. Well, was. When he was alive. You’re ginger. White plus ginger equals lighter ginger. Or white... or ginger...”
Getting frustrated and slightly embarrassed, Sunset groaned. “It. Is. Not. Blizzard.”
“Yes it is...!”
“No, it’s not.”
“Yes!”
“No.”
“Yes...”
“NO!”
“Yes, it i-is... Ow, what the --?”
He protested because Sunset had jumped up at him in anger, pinning him down to the ground. “It. Is. Not. Blizzard.”
Sparrow rolled his eyes, still believing that it was Blizzard. He shoved her off of him, in which she yelped in protest, and he started to leave the den.
Moon was standing at the entrance, four squealing pups standing underneath of her. “...They’re safe from disease,” she said, looking at the ginger wolf questionably.
Sunset glared at Sparrow. “That was his fault.”
Moon rolled her eyes. “...I don’t want to know. Anyway, you can keep them in here now. Soon, they should be able to leave the den... in a couple days, actually. They’re nearly three weeks old, right?”
Sunset nodded.
“Good,” Moon finished. “They can leave in a few days to explore the clearing, and only the clearing.”
Sunset began to gather her pups up and drag them back into the den, while Sparrow tagged along after Moon when she left. “Can I... talk to you?”
Moon nodded, continuing to walk into her den. “About what?”
“Another dream.”
Once they got into Moon’s den, she took Sparrow back a bit further into one of the other tunnels. “Begin,” she instructed.
“Well, it was exactly the same situation as the end of the battle last year, where Isis was killed,” Sparrow explained. “But this time... she killed me.”
Moon nodded slowly. “That shouldn’t concern you as much as you think,” she said. “It could just be a warning that you should be careful, or you might die sooner than you think.”
Sparrow shuddered. “Alright,” he said. “I have a question for you, though... Do you know who Sunset’s mate is?”
Moon blinked. “Hmm?”
“Sunset’s mate.”
“No,” Moon replied quickly. “She never told me.”
Sparrow smirked. “It’s Blizzard, isn’t it?”
Moon frowned at him, a small snarl escaping from her mouth. “I don’t know.”
Realizing finally that he should probably stop talking before Moon decided to kill him, Sparrow gritted his teeth in frustration. “I will find out,” he told her sternly. “There is nothing stopping me from that...”
Moon rolled her eyes. “Fine. Have fun with that,” she replied darkly, turning and heading further back into the tunnels, probably going to check on Sapphire. “Are you... coming?” she asked Sparrow quietly.
“...No,” Sparrow said simply and with little hesitation. “I’ll do it later, or tomorrow... sometime soon.”
Nodding sharply, Moon disappeared from the current tunnel they were in and continued back to Sapphire.
Sighing, Sparrow left. Although it was only late afternoon, he was quite tired, more tired than he usually was. He assumed that it was because he’d been rather... busy today, busier than usual as well. © 2012 master squigglesAuthor's Note
