Ending: Chapter Two

A Chapter by master squiggles

In a dream
Will you give your love to me?
Beg my broken heart to beat
Save my life, change my mind...
- "Cloud Nine" by Evanescence

Sparrow knew that as soon as he woke up, today was not going to be a good day to leave the pack territory.  It was three days after their last hunt, and winter was over.  Spring brought rain, which wasn't hard to see this morning.  Today, it was pouring, the rain blowing across the entire forest in different directions because of the wind.  That wasn't good, because the last they had of their most recent kill was gone.  Moon hadn't let Sunset leave her den or her sight since the hunt where she had been pierced in the shoulder.  Moon swore to her that the injury was more serious than it seemed or felt, but Sunset was naturally stubborn and persistent, so she had somehow managed to make Sunset allow her to leave the den for a few heartbeats.  And, of course on that day, it was raining so hard that the wolves were nearly blinded that morning.

"Lovely day, right?" Sunset said sarcastically, walking up to Sparrow.

Rolling his eyes in agreement, Sparrow scoffed, his fur completely soaked as if he had been standing out here for hours.  "It's downright beautiful."

Sunset let out a sigh.  "Oh well," she said.  "I can handle going hungry this morning."

"Don't say that," a voice suddenly interrupted, startling the other two with its sudden appearance.  It was Sapphire.  "You might give us bad luck today."

Sparrow laughed stiffly.  "In what?"

"...Hunting?" Sapphire asked quizzically, wondering why Sparrow appeared shocked at what she said.  "Aren't we going today?"

"We were supposed to, but it started pouring," Sparrow told her.  "Can't you see all this rain?"

"Obviously," Sapphire said.  "But I really wanted to go hunting today... you know, it gives us all something to do."

Sparrow rolled his eyes.  "You really want to go hunting today, of all days?"

Sapphire nodded eagerly, and Sparrow glared down at her.  "Fine," he said.  "I guess we'll go, so I won't have to hear you talking about it all day."

Excited, Sapphire took off back towards her den as Sparrow finished, leaving Sunset and Sparrow behind.

"Please don't tell me that I have to come," Sparrow complained.

Sunset scoffed.  "You have to," she said.  "I'm guessing Moon and I are the only two not going, besides the pups, of course."

"Pretty much," Sparrow said mock-sadly, letting out an exaggerated sigh.  "But I don't feel like going anywhere today... and it's not like the weather is good today.  Because the weather is sort of horrible."

"Yes, but... we need the food."

"I thought you were with me, not against me..."

"No!  I'm neither.  I'm just here to bother you."

Sparrow ultimately decided to wait for a few more hours before they went hunting, or until the rain stopped at least.  When it never did, he finally made up his mind that they would just leave at some point in the late morning or early afternoon.

Running to his side, Opaque looked slightly nervous.  "Sparrow, are we... going anywhere after the hunt?  For the rest of the night?"

Sparrow frowned at her.  "Well, no... but why do you care?"

"N-nothing," Opaque said quickly.  "I just wanted to know, because I'm kind of tired at the moment and don't feel like hunting anyway, but I know you'll make me go with you and the others so I shouldn't complain."

"No, you shouldn't," Sparrow said firmly.

Opaque growled softly.  "I wish that you'd stop acting like you're older than me," she muttered under her breath, her eyes dark.  "I'm older than you, and everyone knows that."

"But you're not in charge," Sparrow said matter-of-factly.

His sister groaned, and Sparrow smiled, amused.  "I swear, I will kill whoever decided that you were the pack leader.  Because as far as I know, it wasn't Dawn or Leader, because I think you said that they were dead."

Sparrow gulped.  "They were.  It was Sapphire who decided..."

Opaque's eyes widened, and Sparrow's did as well, realizing that he probably just cost Sapphire her life.  He was well aware that his sister was quite capable of causing anyone serious injury, and now he was rather worried about what she would do.

"Sapphire?!  Really?" Opaque protested.

Sparrow's grin grew wider.  "...Yes."  He laughed as she took off towards the den that Sapphire and her shared, wondering what would happen.

Warily walking up to the meeting cliff, Sparrow chose not to get up on it for the reasons spoken of earlier.  (Author's Note: Meaning what I said in the last chapter about the whole him being freaked out by cliffs/mountains.)  Instead, he stood off to the side of it, staring at everyone.  It was still raining, but much less than it had been before, thankfully.  That was good, because Sparrow planned to hunt something different today.

Although he never had personally, Sparrow knew that several wolves from this pack had hunted bison before, and he was fairly sure that he was capable of doing it himself.  He wasn't sure if any of those wolves who had hunted bison were still alive, but... oh well.  He was going to try it.

The hunt went by so quickly that Sparrow didn't remember anything after he finished telling the wolves of what he planned.  During the hunt, they successfully were able to take down a young and weaker bison, without anyone getting injured or emotionally scarred or anything.  They had taken a long and boring walk where nearly nothing happened, attempting to find the bison.  Sparrow hadn't seen bison in nearly four or five years, therefore he had no idea where they lived at the current moment.  But they finally found the whereabouts of them, and then, the hunt went by quickly and smoothly.

After killing the bison, the other bison had formed a herd and began to run to some entirely different area.  The pack was left to eat the bison in piece, in which a small conversation finally took place.

"So," Sapphire began, taking a break from eating for a little while.  "That was... more successful than I thought possible considering I've never hunted bison."

"I have," Opaque said.  "Every time that we hunted them, though, they almost always hurt one of us."

Sparrow was silent as they spoke.  He didn't like how his sister had said "one of us;" it made him feel like an outsider even among the wolves he had lived with for nearly his entire life.  This was what had happened ever since Isis had been killed; he began to drift away from whatever was going on and thought about what his life could have turned out to be like if he had been raised in the South Pack.  Gulping, he slowly came back down to Earth as Opaque said something that sparked his interest.

"I mean, I'm going to be here for just a while tonight, so..."

"What?" His eyes widened, Sparrow looked at his sister firmly.  "What was that?"

Opaque looked as if she were about to kill herself for what she just said.  "Err, I didn't say... anything... I just said that I was going to be gone for a little while tonight..."

"Because...?"

Opaque sighed heavily.  "Look, I... I'll tell you when we go back to our territory."

"In that case," Sparrow replied, "let's go back now.  I want to know what's going on, and I want to know as soon as possible.  I knew that something was up this morning..."

~ ~ ~

"You can't tell anyone."

That was how Opaque began late that night, after meeting with Sparrow underneath of the meeting cliff.

"That's exactly why you've got me confused."  Sparrow sighed, looking at her seriously.  "What's going on?"

"...Fine," Opaque said.  "You remember Hurricane... right?"

Sparrow nodded.

"I forgot to mention.  He's alive."

Sparrow would have choked if he had been eating at the moment, but because he wasn't, his eyes just widened and he stared at her for a few seconds.  Attempting to speak, his eyes widened even more, but he couldn't talk at the moment.  He was overcome with surprise.

"...He.  Is.  ALIVE?" he finally uttered.

"Yes," Opaque told him.  "I was... going to keep it a secret as long as I could, but... you figured it out.  We've been meeting once a week for a while now... I just assume that you were too distracted to notice."

Sparrow was slightly annoyed with her for keeping this secret from him, but he wasn't going to show it as much as he wanted to.  "Fine.  Is he...?"

"From the South Pack?  I told you, he's been a loner for longer than I remember," Opaque interrupted sharply.  "Look, if you want to see him, come with me.  I'll be leaving soon."

Sparrow thought for a moment.  "...Not tonight," he said hastily.  "I'm too tired to go anywhere right now.  I just don't want you gone for long, because you might get some funny ideas."

Opaque glared at him, turning on her heel and disappearing into the trees to the left of them.  With a sigh, Sparrow turned around as well and made his way back to his den, happy that he was finally going to get some rest today.

This was supposed to be SO MUCH LONGER, but I have a big chapter up ahead and was excited to get started. In da chappie before, Cheezit commented about Sparrow 'n Sapphy's relationship, and how it's not as sarcastic and happeh anymore. And that will change by no earlier than chapter ten, because of some... stuff... I've planned. 8D Anyway... tips/suggestions and comments!
