Canyon of ReveriesA Story by MeganAgain, an old one. from August this year. Enjoy.
She ambles out of the doors of a newly refurbished building, trying to avoid the people swarming her, constantly coming to her, rather for a talk, a laugh, or a smile. She just wants out of all of it, if only for a moment. A few steps and she is tredding the forest green grass beneath her, shaded a color darker from the darkness emitted from the sky. Her eyes follow the ground beneath her, searching for a spot to place herself. Her pupils dialate as they rest on a tall, overpowering tree near the boundaries of the soft, slightly wet surface beneath her. It is there where she sits, as if hiding herself from everyone inside the building. She loves them, yet she knows she cannot handle their happiness and joy all at once.
Just a moment before she becomes lost within herself and her thoughts, a strange scent wafts around her, resembling a sweet sensation of vanilla overtaking a child as he assembles into grandmother's kitchen, the buzzer ringing, telling them the cookies are ready. In this she finds serenity. She chuckles to herself: serenity, in a world full of darkness and utter confusion. Serenity, she finds in a smell, something so small, so..insignificant. She always wondered this: if the world has so much darkness, so much sin overpowering everything worldly, how can she find such pacifying feelings from obscure objects? Even in her state, her mind couldn't fail to see the bless'ed irony in the situation.
A sudden thought causes her to direct her attention to the sky above her. And in her vision, is what she knows as beauty. The stars in her path are twinkling as diamonds would if they fell from the sky. They are as God's angels floating around, a blissful illumination watching over us constantly. Even in the daylight, when we cannot see them, they are right there before us. All we must do is think, look, imagine beyond what the human eye can see, and it will be right there. Always.
A soft sound behind me echoes in her ears as when a lonely, abandoned child yells to a deeply valleyed canyon just to hear a voice, his voice, any voice, respond back. Just to know someone is with you, even if it is just yourself. This sound, which is recognizable as a crunching of leaves, pulls her out of my reverie of thoughts and feelings. She wills her body to turn, and she looks all around her for a long time, waiting for someone to appear, searching for her. After a while, a realization passes over her that no one is out there, and it is simply my imagination at work. An illusion if you will, perhaps what she longs for so deeply, she sensed right there next to her.
Either way, she thinks as she looks back up at the night sky and feels the soft, wet grass inbetween her toes, as of now I am the only one out here. Me. Alone. With God's little Angels fluttering over me, as they fluttered over that abandoned boy calling to the canyon. © 2012 Megan |
