Chapter 1A Chapter by Moth PhoenixLike i promised here you are!!!I held onto Jamie’s hand as we walked back home from the supermarket. It was our very first week in Oahu and Cayden had sent us out to get food. We followed the path we had taken there and arrived at his little house. “Cayden? We’re back with the food!” I called out running my fingers through my hair. I walked out onto the deck and looked at the ocean. It was so pretty. Before we moved to Hawaii we were stuck in Idaho. We had never seen the ocean before and it was just so beautiful. We heard footsteps and I saw Cayden appear. “What did you get?” he asked sitting down at the table. I walked back into the house and over to the table. I took out the groceries and showed them to him. He nodded. “Oh awesome! They had Fredrick’s brand?” he was referring to the pasta. Apparently that’s the only kind of pasta he’ll eat. I nodded and took a water to drink. “Where’s Jamie?” he asked. I pointed over to the couch and she waved at Cayden. He stood up and stretched. “You okay?” I looked up from the table and into his eyes. I shrugged. “I have no idea if I am or not to be honest. I mean Oliver killed mom and no one believes me, how can I be happy after that?” he nodded and patted my back. “You knew her more than me. She gave me up for adoption when she had me.” I looked at him and patted his head. “Why?” I asked. “She was only 15 at the time as I recall. I know this because my parents told me about her. When the police called me and told me what happened I was devastated. Mom was gone, but she left me you and your sister, well sort of. I mean you look more like her than Jamie does.” I guess that was a good thing. I nodded. “Mom talked about you sometimes. She would always mention her first child and how much she didn’t want to give you up. She thought that it would be the best idea though and I’m really sorry she did. You’re a pretty cool older brother.” He smiled and hugged me. “Thanks. Hey why don’t you check out the ocean tonight. There’s gonna be an almost full moon, it should be pretty nice.” He said with a wink. I was a tad confused why he did that. I shrugged nodded. “Cool. So, what would you two like to do?” he asked walking over to the couch and sitting next to Jamie. “Let’s go for a walk!” Jamie suggested. “I wanna go see the ocean!” she jumped up and down and laughed. “Okay, okay. Lany can you get the key in the bear jar?” Cayden asked. I nodded and turned around. I looked for the bear jar and I saw it. I grabbed the key inside and handed it to him. We headed out the door into the warm summer air. I could smell salt in the air. I took Jamie’s hand and we followed Cayden down to the shore. It was so peaceful standing there. “Wow.....” Jamie said. “It’s beautiful!” she let go of my hand and ran over to the water and put her feet in. “Be careful Jay!” I called. She nodded and put her feet back into the water. I looked at Cayden, who’s sandy blonde hair was blowing in the light breeze. “You’ve honestly never seen the ocean?” he asked. I shook my head no. “Idaho sucks. No ocean. Lakes and stuff, yes, oceans, no.” I said. It was true. I had been living in Idaho and when mom was murdered the police contacted my only living family member, Cayden, who was down in Oahu. When I heard we’d be staying with him I was so happy. Jamie was happy too, she’d get to see the ocean. “I’m sorry, well be happy you’re here now!” he said and smiled. I nodded and looked around. The water was so blue, I’ve never seen water so blue before. It was almost green. The breeze felt so nice on my face. I looked to my left and saw a group of kids walking by, they looked like they were having a fun time. I had left all my friends back in Idaho, which really were only three. Once our walk was over we headed back to his house and he made us some dinner. It was weird being in someone else’s house still. I was very used to living with mom and Oliver. Now that mom is gone and Oliver is on the run it feels different. I mean don’t get me wrong, I love being with Cayden, but I miss my house. It was 9:40 and Jamie had fallen asleep. Cayden told me that he’d bring her into bed. I nodded and sat on the couch for a moment. Then I got up and grabbed my sweater and the key and headed out. Cayden did tell me to go check the beach out at night, so that’s what I was going to go do. I walked in my flip flops down a different path than before. I found a little cave to sit in. I put my feet in the cool water and went half way in. I had to take off my shirt because I didn’t want it wet. As I was climbing on the rocks I slipped a bit and fell into the water. I tried to move but my foot was tangled in a rock. I looked down and I could barely see anything, I tried my best by the moonlight to get my foot out of there. All of a sudden I felt someone touch my foot and get it free. They then held on to me as I began to black out. The last thing I remember seeing is that bright moon and then, darkness. “Shh be quiet, don’t wake her up you butt head!” I heard a girl’s voice faintly say. I opened my eyes and I saw four teenagers looking down at me. I sat up and panicked for a moment. “Hey, whoa, calm down there. You’re okay. You took a nasty fall from the sea cave over there.” The girl said. I looked at her smiling at me and then at the three boys who were there. I looked all around and I could tell I was farther away from Cayden’s house. I could see it in the distance. “Is that what happened?” I asked. They nodded. I sat up and could hear a faint fire crackling in the back. “Austin saved you.” One of the guys said. “Where did that boy go?” he asked under his breath. The girl gave me a spare shirt to put on since I had left mine back by the cave. “He went to go get fire wood you dumb!” another boy said. “Hey there he is! The hero of the hour.” I looked over and saw a boy with longish dirty blonde hair, jean shorts on, sneakers, and he was carrying small firewood. “Oh, hey, you’re awake. Do you feel okay?” he asked. I didn’t know what to say, he was extremely hot, I became all shy. “Uhm.. yes... I think so.” He sat down next to me and looked me over. He looked at my arms and hands and then legs to make sure I didn’t have any cuts. He found a big gash on my ankle. “Well it doesn’t look like you’re okay.” He said. I saw the gash on my ankle and I looked at the girl who smiled. “He’ll fix you up. Tim, you have the first aid kit, right?” she asked the boy with glasses. He nodded and handed her a small kit. She took out some bandages and gave them to Austin. “So, what’s your name?” Tim asked. I looked at the girl and then at Austin and then at Tim and the other dude. “Lany Mewes.” I said chewing on my lip for a second. “Lany, what’s a pretty name,” the girl stated, “my name is Kylie, and this is Austin, Tim, and Rob.” They waved at me. “Guys! Hey guys! I’m sorry I’m late I had to help my mom with-” I heard another guy. He had medium long hair, which was brown, and he was in sweats and holding a cell phone. “Oh, and that’s Stacy,” Kylie said. I nodded. “He’s a bit of a clumsy dude I should say.” I chuckled a bit and looked around. “What time is it exactly?” I asked quietly. “About 11:30. You were out for quite a bit girl.” Austin said fixing his hair. I nodded. “Oh no I hope my brother isn’t worried.” I said. “You live with your brother?” Tim asked. I nodded .”Now that’s just silly. Why do you live with your brother?” “Tim! That’s not very nice.” Stacy said and sat down next to me. “What? I’m just curious. I mean I live with my drunk father. It’s just a question no need to get all pissy mister.” “Well uhm...I guess I don’t-” “Lany! There you are! Oh my gosh! What- what happened?” it was Cayden. “Oh uhm...” “She had a small accident. She fell off the rocks and I saved her. She has a gash on her ankle. She’s been with us dude, no need to get upset.” Austin said. Cayden just looked at me and then at the others. I nodded. “Well thanks. Come on Lany, let’s get you back home.” Cayden said. Kylie helped me up and I limped over to my brother. “Thanks.” The guys nodded and smiled. “Bye Lany! Hope to see you again soon.” Kylie said. I nodded and smiled back. Cayden picked me up and we walked back to his house. “Do you want to tell me what happened?” he asked. “I fell off the wall of a sea cave and my foot got caught, that’s why I have this gash. I’m fine okay.” He nodded and opened his front door and hugged me. “I’m just glad you’re okay. I’m not mad at you, you understand? No way am I mad at you. I’m only worried.” I hugged him back and nodded. He kissed my forehead and sent me up to the guest room. I changed out of my clothes and into white panties and a light white night shirt. I crawled into the bed and listened to the ocean waves as I began to drift and fall asleep. Cayden was the manager of a big restaurant in town. He left early the next morning which meant I had to entertain my sister. He left us some spending money and we had decided to go into town and look at all the shops. “Whoa! Look at all the pretty shell necklaces!” Jamie said. It was too hot to go into the store she wanted to go into, I gave her 10 dollars and let her go in, I told her I’d be waiting out here for her and if she needed me she could come and get me. She said okay and walked into the store. I stood outside and waited for her. I looked up at the sky and just thought. Somewhere back in the actual states, was Oliver. He hadn’t cleaned his hands off just yet. Me and Jamie were the only witnesses and we would get him one way or another. “Lany!” I looked in front of me and saw Kylie and a little boy. “Hey Kylie!” I said with a smile. She had beautiful tan skin, to die for honey brown eyes, mocha hair and she had the perfect body. I felt so icky next to her. “Ethan can you say hi to Lany?” Kylie said to the little boy. “This is my step brother, his name is Ethan.” She said. “Hi Ethan.” I said. He smiled and waved at me. “So what brings you to town today? I mean after last night I’d still be asleep.” She said with a tiny chuckle. “My brother had to work and he left us some money so-” “Us?” she asked. “My little sister, Jamie. She’s in the store buying something for herself.” I said. Kylie nodded. “So we’re just gonna walk around and chill. What are you up to?” I asked her. “My brother just wanted to get out of the house. Our parents are uhm out but they’ll be back later. We were gonna go hang out at the beach, you want to join?” she asked. Jamie came back out with two shell necklaces and smiled at me. “Jamie, can you say hi?” I asked. She looked up at Kylie and smiled. “This is Ethan.” She introduced them and they got all cute and shy. “Sure, we’d love to join you.” We followed them down to the shore and sat on the warm sand. We watched the two of them play in the water together. “I’ve never seen you around here, are you from here? Or one of the other islands?” she asked me. I smiled and looked at the sky. “I’m from Idaho.” I said looking at her. Her jaw dropped. “If you’re gonna ask me what I think you’re gonna ask me, the answer is no.” I said chuckling. “I can’t believe there are people that have never seen the ocean. I mean that’s like so crazy. I can’t wrap my mind around that. What was your first reaction when you saw the ocean?” she asked turning to me. I smiled and turned to her. “You know when a really hot guy says hi to you or even recognizes you, you get that like butterfly or something feeling?” I asked. She nodded. “That’s how I felt when I saw the ocean. I mean it’s so beautiful.” She nodded with a smile. “That’s so awesome that you got to see it. I’m sorry you fell in it last night,” she paused and looked at me as I was looking off to the side. My eyes turned towards her and she smiled. “You know Austin did such a brave thing last night. I don’t think he’d do that for any of us.” I was totally confused. “How come? From the small amount of time that I was with he seemed pretty cool.” She shook her head and chuckled. “He is a cool dude, but I’m not sure. He only has a selected few that he would do stuff like that for. He barely knows you, but take my advice, get to know him.” She smiled. She was so pretty. I envied her beauty. I had long brown hair, down to my mid back, pale skin, a bit of a baby face, I wasn’t a twig, but I wasn’t a tree, I was a branch. I wish I looked as beautiful as her. “Get to know him?” I asked to make sure I heard her. She nodded. “He’s a great guy. I’ve been friends with him for quite a while and he can always make the crowd laugh when they’re all frowning.” I smiled. “That’s nice. Okay, I guess I’ll take you up on that offer. You’re alright Kylie. I wish I had had a friend like you when I was in school.” She patted my back. “I wish I had a friend like you period. None of the girls talk to me anymore. My ex boyfriend, Hayden, he cheated on me and made it look like I was a complete ho. No girls want me as their friend and all the guys want me. It’s painful, but I’m glad I have you now!” she said. That made me feel special. No one has never “wanted” me like that before. I felt warm inside. This was gonna be a great start to a new life. © 2010 Moth PhoenixAuthor's Note
