TwoA Chapter by Moth PhoenixIt truly is amazing what cover up can do to an extent. I finished putting my eye shadow on and combing my hair. I put my hood on and looked at myself in the mirror. I could see through my dark make up my sad hazel eyes. I wanted to cry but I didn't want to have to reapply my make up for the fifth time this morning. I had cried earlier. Father left for work at 6, so I was happy I had sometime to myself before school began. It was rare that he left early, he only leaves early if it's really important. I fixed my black tank top and sighed. I sat at the kitchen table eating my toast and I looked around. I glanced quickly at the clock, 7:40, I had some time before the bus came by the end of my street. I figured I'd go check on Mrs. Pollyhawk's cat next door. She had asked me to watch her cat and check on her. I took my cell phone with me. As I limped over to her house in the brisk weather I thought. I just...thought. I didn't really think about anything in particular, but I just thought. Mrs. Pollyhawk was the sweetest woman, but recently she had fallen down and she was in the hospital. When I entered her yard I noticed she had five newspapers and I took liberty at bringing them in. "Jasper?" I said quietly placing the newspapers on her little table next to the door. "Jasper, where are you kitty?" he came running and he was purring. He was a black cat, with lime green eyes, and white teeth. I walked into the kitchen and saw that he had eaten his food so I put out some new food. I picked him up and gave him a kiss. "Alright buddy, I'll see you later." I walked back out and I accidently bumped into someone and fell to the ground. "Oh my gosh, I'm sorry!" it was man who spoke. I moved my hair out of my face and looked. It was Mrs. Pollyhawk's grandson. I only know that because she has a picture of him on her fridge. He put his hand out for me to take, but I didn't. I stood up and looked at him. "I'm terribly sorry, uhm can I ask why you're in my grandmother's house?" "I'm supposed to look after her cat, Jasper...." I was barely audible, but he heard me. "Are you Lany?" he asked. I nodded and bit my lip. "My grandma mentioned you were going to be taking care of Jasper," he smiled at me and put his hand out again, "I'm Jared." I looked at him and shook his hand. "Lany Madge...." I felt as though he was looking at my sad eyes. I didn't know what to say. "Uhm here you can take care of Jasper," I handed him her key and ran. I got too scared. It hurt like hell though. I get scared when I talk to a guy other than Beau. Beau was different though. I got in the house and grabbed my bag and iPod and headed out towards the bus stop. I saw Jared again. "Hey, why'd you run away?" he asked getting closer to me. I tried to not pay attention to him so I kept walking. I could hear his footsteps get closer and he grabbed my arm. That freaked me out so I accidently pushed him and he fell. I stopped and turned around. "I'm sorry...I'm sorry." I helped him up and tried not to make eye contact. He brushed himself off and cleared his throat. "I just...I...uhm...why do you want to talk to me?" I asked. He looked at me and let out a chuckle. "You seem sweet. I wanted to know why you ran away for one, and since you know my grandma you're sometimes the topic of the conversation." I held tightly onto my backpack and looked down at my feet. I scrunched my face. "Oh...." "Sorry I grabbed you, I didn't mean to freak you out or anything." He made a sad face. "I'm sorry I pushed you I don't like being grabbed like that." He nodded and I saw the bus coming. "Mind if I ask how old you are?" I didn't want to answer. I didn't like talking to people sometimes and right now was one of those times. I waited for the bus to get closer and once it was at the stop I told him. "I'm sixteen." I ran onto the bus and looked for Beau. I didn't see him so I sat down wherever I could. I watched Jared get smaller and smaller. I felt my heart pound. My phone vibrated which also scared me. I opened it and it was a text from Beau. He missed the bus so his mom was driving him to school. I told him it was fine and I'd see him at school. One of the kids, Sean Matthews, poked me. "Ayo, freakoid, did you just come out of your hole? Or is that all daddy could afford?" him and his friends laughed. I didn't pay attention and when they saw I wasn't paying attention they kept bugging me. "Hey, I'm talking to you. Hmm?" I turned and he kept touching me. He pulled me towards him and pulled my hood down lower. He then threw me against the wall of the bus. "Such a freak. Hey goth freak, go back to where you came from, hell!" I kept my hood over my face the rest of the way to school. As I walked off the school bus I saw Beau get out of his car. I walked over to his car and said hi to his mom. "Lany, why are you limping?" he asked. I had forgotten about that. I guess I should tell you the real reason why I'm limping before I lie to my best friend. Monday Beau gave me a hug and we were just being friendly, my father saw us, and to be punished, he tripped me while I was walking downstairs and I twisted my ankle. It hurts like hell every time I try and use it. "I tripped walking home yesterday while you were at track." I stuck my tongue out at him and giggled. "Hey! Coach Daniels is freaking strict this year. I hate it!" we walked into school and headed towards History class. "Can I come over this afternoon? My mom and dad can't pick me up and I don't want to be home alone..." I wasn't sure because I didn't know what time father would be home. "Sure." I said. I had a surge of confidence and I said yes. I mean Beau rarely ever got to come over so I thought that it would be a semi good idea. We waited outside the class and he looked me in my eyes. He moved a piece of hair out of m face and I looked away. "Why are you so shy today?" he asked quietly. I looked quickly at him and then away again. "I'm not it's just I ran into Mrs. Pollyhawk's grandson this morning..." I said. Beau cocked his head to the side. "What's that got to do with anything?" "He grabbed my arm and it sort of freaked me out, I pushed him and he fell. I just feel really sorry for doing that." I did feel really sorry. I just when father grabs me there is no way out of it, and that's always my first reaction. "Oh, I'm sorry. Why'd he grab you?" I could hear the over protective Beau somewhere in that sentence. I giggled and looked up at him. "He just wanted to know my age, I guess I didn't hear him with my head phones on." I said. "What's his name?" "Jared." I answered. I put some weight accidently on my foot which caused me to almost fall, but Beau caught me. "Lany, you need to go to the nurse for your ankle. I don't wanna see you fall and get hurt again." I couldn't go to the nurse, she would end up calling my father. "No, it's okay. I uhm I'm fine Beau, really I am." I smiled at him and held his little bunny. "Freakoid there you are! Awww you and you're boyfriend getting snuggly? Oooh what's this?" Sean grabbed the little bunny out of my hands and looked at it. "Matthews give that back!" Beau said. He thought for a moment and then looked at me. "How about no. I'll go give this to my girlfriend, she'll love it." "Sean come on! Leave us alone!" Beau defended both of us. Sean walked over to me and pulled my hood down again which caused me to fall. He laughed at me and I felt him throw something at me. "Whatever, you two are such creeps." Beau helped me up and I just half smiled at him. He handed me the little bunny and made a mean face to where Sean was. "Why do you let him do this to you?" Beau asked. I was too afraid to fight back. When I fight back with father I'm usually on the ground or being kicked in the stomach. "I try...." I said. The school bell rang and we all entered our classroom. Miss Kilmain greeted her morning class as we sat down. I took my usual seat in the back along with Beau and we waited for class to begin. Once everyone entered the room she explained what we would be doing. While Miss Kilmain was talking about World War 1, the classroom door opened and Mr. Peterson walked in. "Hello Mr. Peterson, what brings you here?" she asked. Beau didn't know I went to see him yesterday and I probably should have told him. "Is Lany Madge in your class by any chance?" everyone turned and looked at me. I felt my face get hot and I stood up. Beau tugged at my jacket for a minute. "I'll tell you later Beau, I promise." I walked over to Mr. Peterson and followed him out the door. "Is that your best friend you told me about? Beau?" he asked as we walked towards his office. "Mmhmm." I said quietly. "He seems like a nice boy. How long have you two been friends?" I had to think. No one has ever asked me that question. "Since fifth grade Mr. Peterson." I answered. He smiled and opened his door. I walked in first and saw Mrs. Mills, the school principal sitting waiting for the two of us. "Hello Lany, how are you today?" she asked. Her blonde hair was in an extremely tight bun and her black heels couldn't get any higher, and her suit, damn she must've had to use some butter to get inside it, it was so tight. I sat down on the little green couch he had in his office and he took a seat in his chair. "What's going on?" I asked quietly. I took my hood off and played with my sweater. "Lany, your teachers have noticed that you're a good with the silent intelligence. You're a bright girl, but you don't like talking a lot to teachers. I've been told by your history, english, math and chemistry teacher that when your friend Beau isn't in the class, you're quiet, but when he is you sometimes raise your hand." "Yeah so?" I asked. She glanced at Mr. Peterson and then back at me. She cleared her throat first. "We think that a regular scheduled meeting with Mr. Peterson will open you up a little more. You're going to skip all of your studies and come meet him, okay? I will have to notify your father-" my eyes opened wide and I had to speak up. "NO!" I said loudly. They both looked at me and I didn't know what to say. I held my breath for a moment and then spoke again. "My dad uhm he's never really home..." I lied. They looked at each other again and then Mr. Peterson spoke. "He answered the phone yesterday when I called him." I had to come up with some kind of lie. "He was home for only a little bit Mr. Peterson, and he gets upset when people bug him." "What about your mother?" Miss Kilmain said. "I haven't seen her since I was six." I said. She nodded slightly and then spoke again. "Lany is there anyone who looks after you that we could just notify that you will be working with Mr. Peterson?" I thought for a minute and then Mrs. Pollyhawk came to mind. "Uhm well.... my next door neighbor, Mrs. Pollyhawk sometimes looks after me. She's in the hospital though, but uhm her grandson is at her house." Miss Kilmain and Mr.Peterson nodded. "Okay, I'll make the call. I'll leave you two alone now." Miss Kilmain got up and left. I looked at Mr. Peterson who smiled at me. He was a young man, 35 to be exact, dirty blonde shaggy hair, like my father's but well combed, and bright blue eyes. He wore glasses which just completed his whole look. "Why don't you tell me about yourself Lany? I didn't really get to know you that much yesterday, I just wanted to let you know we'd be meeting and all of that." I shrugged. "What do you want to know?" I asked. "Like when is your birthday, your favorite music, I already know who your best friend is, uhm favorite food, all that stuff." He said. I nodded and sighed. I looked out the window and began to speak. "Well I don't exactly know when my birthday is because my dad never celebrated it when I was younger. I know that it's in the summer and I am a 94 baby, but I don't know the exact month and date." He looked up something on the computer and pulled up my file. "Here I can tell you, come over here." He turned his chair towards the computer and I got up and slowly walked over to where he was. I looked and saw when my birthday was. It was on July 9th. That must've been why dad was his meanest on that date, it was the day I ruined his life as he puts it. "Thanks...." I said. I went and sat back down and curled up in a ball. "I wish I didn't know now...." "What about your favorite music? What bands do you like?" he asked smiling. Instead of me telling him I handed him my iPod to look through, which he did. "Very cool selection Lany, very cool." I nodded and looked down at my legs. "Can I ask you something Lany?" I nodded. "I don't want to just shock you with all of this, but uhm...I talked with the nurse yesterday and she brought up your name, she mentioned that in the past three months you have been held out of gym due to significant injuries. I need to know this Lany," I didn't want to look him in the eyes, so I looked out the window again. "Lany, you have to look at me and tell me the truth. Is there anyone, anyone at all that you know who is abusing you?" my inner voice was screaming, 'father, father'! I suppressed the voice and shook my head no. "Are you positive?" his tone was extremely serious. I nodded again. Father would hear about this whole thing one way or another and I knew that it would not be very good. © 2010 Moth PhoenixAuthor's Note
