Christmas at Home

Christmas at Home

A Poem by Maddox

Warmth spreads
winding it's way
through the tinsel filled
halls.
The tree
illuminates the
open room.
Ornaments
dangle, showing
their wealth.
The mysterious
black cat
winds its way around
the bottom of that
accursed tree.
The blinds open for all
to see.
The half frozen girl  stands
on the sidewalk
outside.
Snow piles up
around her.
Her ragged clothes
hold no warmth.
She trudges forward
aimlessly.
She reaches a stoop of
an abandoned home.
Climbing the
unforgiving stairs
she huddles in
all warmth
abandoning her.
Suddenly she remembers this house
and these stairs
she remembers the
tree that use to sit
in that living room.
It was her house
when her parents still
cared.
It use to be
warm
her safe haven. Now
she curls up on the
abandoned front porch,
spending Christmas
at home one
last time.
